After such a long wait, I was convinced my story for the Writers of the Future contest for the first quarter would be a flat rejection. Not one peep did I hear from the day I submitted while I listened to others receive their awards. I even reread my story for myself and thought it dreadful. Maybe I'm too hard on myself. Either that or my writing has truly improved since I submitted this story, but I even thought it deserved rejection.
So I waited... and waited... and waited.
The mail came not ten minutes ago with a familiar manila envelope included. I felt relief more than anything else and opened it expecting to find my manuscript returned with the standard rejection slip. What a surprise to find I'd made Honorable Mention. I couldn't believe it. I was sure everything had been taken except those stories that were rejected. Of course, I alway hope to win, but after convincing myself that I'd get zilch this time around, I must admit I'm pleasantly surprised. Probably more this way than if I'd received it the conventional way.
My next entry is already prepared for the fourth quarter and will be in the mail before the end of the week. I have no idea why I've put it off this long and know its a much better story than anything I've done so far thanks to the help of my fellow Hatrackers. It's the one about Charlie for those of you who might recognize it.
So congratulations to everyone who did well in the first quarter, and here's to higher awards to come for us all.
