Welcome to this week's Novel Support Group (NSG). Anyone can join. If you're new, tell us a bit about who you are and what project you are working on. Feel free to update the NSG Work in Progress thread with your current projects. Although we can report on any number of things, here is a list of suggestions (suggestions welcomed).

  • What were your goals last week and did you accomplish them?
  • Describe what you worked on.
  • Set goals for next week.
  • Did you learn something during this week?

Here is a list of things that you can do each week as we work on our novels (suggestions welcomed).

  • Writing on a novel
  • Characterization
  • World Building
  • Relevant research

Last Week's Goals

I'm sick today with a stomach bug so I'll have to keep this short this week.

I finished cleaning up the scans of my book 3 outlines. Now I just need to go through them and combine the scenes from all of them.

My goals for next week:

  • Combine Book 3 scenes

Combine the scenes. This is never fun, but it is interesting to see how the books have changed over the drafts.

What did I learn this week?

Nothing here.

Well, I've been sort of a slacker this week.
Winter blues are still gripping me, so getting up in the morning is difficult. Yet, I've made some progress on the how-to, and I've set up a new would-be novel in Scrivener. (Which I purchased a few days back.)
So, not a total loss.

This week I learned Douglas Adams may have actually done some of his whacky writing on purpose.

Last Week's Goals:

MAGIC'S FOOL: Start the third draft.
Started and finished. Then, at the very end, I thought of a change to the plot that will make the story better. [Smile]

MAGE STORM: Keep querying. Two more queries out next week.
Yes. [Smile]

SEVEN STARS: Let it rest.
Easy goal. [Smile]

BLOOD WILL TELL: Either call or email the agent again. Keep working on the possible cover art.
No and yes. I'm going to have to do something about this next week. [Frown]

BLOOD IS THICKER: Let it rest.
Another easy one. [Smile]

OTHER:
Update my blog twice a week. And finish the first draft of the short story which may one day become a WotF entry.
Yes and no. [Smile]

Next Week's Goals:

MAGIC'S FOOL:
Continue with the changes for the new plot elements.

MAGE STORM:
Keep querying. Two more queries out next week.

SEVEN STARS:
Let it rest.

BLOOD WILL TELL:
Either call or email the agent again. Keep working on the possible cover art.

BLOOD IS THICKER:
Let it rest.

OTHER:
Update my blog twice a week.

Get some work done on the first draft of the short story which may one day become a WotF entry.

Okay, this definitely helped keep me on track.

So, last week's goals:

M.O.P.
Look over scenes for ch. 10-17, edit ch. 10-13.
Yes! I finished 11k in edits Yeehaw!

Submit short story to contest.
Yes! This is pretty huge, as it's only my second submission ever. I know it won't win, but it's a big milestone to stick my neck out anyway (I'm such a perfectionist chicken).

Waffling on whether I have time to do this one - edit short story to prep it for WoTF.
Decided I just won't have time. I want M.O.P done.

Next weeks goals:

M.O.P
Edit ch 14-15. These are big ones that need a loooot of work.

Thanks for the encouragement

WBSchmidt and axeminister, I hope you feel better this week!

Last Week's Goals and Accomplishments

Combine the older two of my three novel binders, and either file or discard any material that is no longer relevant.
--Done. [Smile] This took me half of a day, but my reference material is much better organized.

Research: Start reading Trees of Pennsylvania and the Northeast from cover to cover.
--Done. [Smile] I also flagged the most relevant trees.

Research Georgian/Federal homes (again) and decide what the face of the main house looks like.
--Done! [Smile] There are nitpicky details that aren't clear, but the MCs aren't likely to consider those.

Work on the story draft every day.
--Done. [Smile] I spent most of my time removing a character from Chapter Three and replacing a couple awkward moments that would have done nothing for the plot.

Next Week's Goals
  • Research: Continue reading Trees of Pennsylvania and the Northeast. The forest life on his property is very important to one of my MCs, so I must know what he sees and feels about it.
  • Work on the story draft every day.

Lessons Learned
The reason I can spend more time on RITN than DeCo is not only that the plot of DeCo is more complicated and the MC's mind is more alien, it's also that the research for DeCo is less enjoyable. The information that I learn about real life while researching for DeCo is depressing. I'll spend hours reading about military technology and culture, relevant conspiracies, and dangerous medical studies for DeCo, while for RITN, I get to read about and look at pictures of trees, wildflowers, historic homes, and real schools, and learn about theoretical biology and experimental psychics.

If I'm ever going to work on DeCo again (and making progress on RITN gets me thinking that I can), then I'm going to need to figure out how to control my moods better. One. Of. These. Days.

@aspirit

Thank you. It took a few days but I almost feel human again.
