Welcome to this week's Novel Support Group (NSG). Anyone can join. If you're new, tell us a bit about who you are and what project you are working on. Feel free to update the NSG Work in Progress thread with your current projects. Although we can report on any number of things, here is a list of suggestions (suggestions welcomed).

  • What were your goals last week and did you accomplish them?
  • Describe what you worked on.
  • Set goals for next week.
  • Did you learn something during this week?

Here is a list of things that you can do each week as we work on our novels (suggestions welcomed).

  • Writing on a novel
  • Characterization
  • World Building
  • Relevant research

Last Week's Goals

Once again I've done no writing.

My goals for next week:

  • Something writing related

I really should go back and review what I've written before.

What I need to learn this week

I've been distracted with a programming project on my website. The site brings in a bit of money (enough to pay expenses and a little more), but I know I could build it up to bring in even more money. I've debated doing this for several years, actually, but kept delaying adding the features I've wanted for a long time. I'm debating this again.

This programming upgrade could take several months (or more), but I feel it would be worth the effort. Now, all I do is some basic data entry every few months and that's it; perhaps 20 hours every three months. The features I want to add would increase the amount of data entry hours but it could bring in much more that what it does not.

What I need to learn (decide) is whether I feel I can balance writing and programming (along with work, family, etc.). I hyper focus on one task at a time normally. I would like to dedicate at least one day each week to writing and the rest to building up my website. Let's see how long that lasts. I may learn that I need to focus on one project at a time.

Finished the first draft of all three books in my Shattuk Downs trilogy. The three books are currently about 250,000 words. Worked on my WotF story.

Next Week: Begin to rewrite first book. I've already rewritten a 'book throwing' chapter. Two readers were prompted to feel excessive frustration at my character's inability to act. Now I have to smooth out that rewrite and make it consistent with the rest of the stories.
