Welcome to this week's Novel Support Group. Anyone can join. If you're new, tell us a bit about who you are and what project you are working on. Feel free to update the NSG Work in Progress thread with your current projects. Although we can report on any number of things, here is a list of suggestions (suggestions welcomed).

What were your goals last week and did you accomplish them?
Describe what you worked on.
Set goals for next week.
Did you learn something during this week?

Here is a list of things that you can do each week as we work on our novels (suggestions welcomed).

Writing on a novel
Characterization
World Building
Relevant research

=-=-=-=-=

As for me:

Last Week's Goals:

DUAL MAGICS SERIES: As time permits, go through the x-ray listings for the Dual Magics boxed set and THE BARD'S GIFT. This is here to remind me that eventually I need to get back to this.
[Razz]

BECOME: TO CATCH THE LIGHTNING: Promote through social media. I really need to find a way to become more effective at this. I really have to get back to that marketing book.
Some. I still have to get back to that book. [Smile]

BECOME: TO RIDE THE STORM: Revisions complete. I'm actually going to leave this alone for a week or so before starting the polishing edit. There's no rush since I'm not planning to publish until after Christmas anyway. And I want to do a little more research on different launch strategies.
I've started the polishing edit and am reading a book on launch strategies. [Smile]

MAGE STORM: Hold for revisions to BECOME: TO RIDE THE STORM. And try to resist the bright new shiny idea that came to me last night. Or not. Well, it's not a new idea, more like a story puzzle that didn't have all the pieces yet. Now, I think it does.
Easy one. (At least the hold for revisions, part.) [Wink]

OTHER:
Update my blog twice a week.
Yes. [Smile]

Next Week's Goals:

DUAL MAGICS SERIES:
As time permits, go through the x-ray listings for the Dual Magics boxed set and THE BARD'S GIFT. This is here to remind me that eventually I need to get back to this.

BECOME: TO CATCH THE LIGHTNING:
Promote through social media. I really need to find a way to become more effective at this. I really have to get back to that marketing book.

BECOME: TO RIDE THE STORM:
Finish the polishing edit. Come up with a more strategic launch plan.

MAGE STORM:
Hold for revisions to BECOME: TO RIDE THE STORM.

OTHER:
Update my blog twice a week.

List of published books just to remind me of all the things I should be paying at least some attention to:

Blood Will Tell (Chimeria #1)
Blood Is Thicker (Chimeria #2)
Fire and Earth
The Bard's Gift
Daughter of the Disgraced King
The Shaman's Curse (Dual Magics #1)
The Voice of Prophecy (Dual Magics #2)
Beyond the Prophecy (Dual Magics #3)
War of Magic (Dual Magics #4)
Become: To Catch the Lighting (Become #1)

Start working on a promotion for BECOME: TO CATCH THE LIGHTNING to precede and coincide with the launch of the sequel, BECOME: TO RIDE THE STORM.

Well, it seems the writing bug has infected my brain once again. All it took was a little neuro-chemical adjustment and I'm fine. Oooh, look, shiny thing! Was I talking?

Anyway, I just dusted off my file of story ideas I've meant to finish for a long time and, horror of horrors, some of them date back over three years ago. Aaaaargh!

Let's make a little list of stories that I've missed.

Short Stories:

Here, Kitty, Inspired by a writing challenge here on Hatrack
The Ascent of a Man,Inspired by a writing challenge here on Hatrack
A Troll's Troth,Inspired by a writing challenge here on Hatrack
(Most likely a 20,000 word Novella)
The Everyman Protocol

Novels:

Shadow Government
Aesir Dawn
Falcon's Wings
Rayne Fall
Ask Not
Daisy World
G-Man

And there are two or three others hidden away on one of my back-up drives that I want to hunt down.

Where to start? It's not as easy as it might sound.

Ah, well. The life of a writer is tough. I guess I just need to pull the finger out and just start--somewhere.

Phil.

Probably way off -- I would take a first look at Ask Not for possible wordplay and hilarity. Akin to the 1973 Spaghetti Western farce motion picture My Name Is Nobody? Possible in any genre; counter-inspirational self-help-sabotage satire of self-help and inspirational genre? Someone named Not who, say, is a hermit-dotage-curmudgeon-guru of infamy who only wants to be left alone, rare occasion for cruel-serendipitous bass-akward pranks, and common wisdom Not has valid, off-kilter answers to the purpose of life and why one sock of a pair disappears in the laundry? Mindful the title also invokes John Kennedy's "Ask not what your country can do for you" speech.

Next, Shadow Government, for possible political horror intrigue, international crime and corruption satire. Say, party machine faction hegemons, White, Elite, Indolent, Rich, Demagogue, Patriarch, Christian, Supremacist, WEIRD PCS, clandestine meta-megalomaniac masculists that dominate the world from deepest cover atop a shiny stone city on a hill? WEIRD PCS it is who dictate whom, when, and where the Four Horsemen gambol, and the whom whom are on the hot seat for individual, group, region, hinterland, nation gaslight, subjugation, exploitation, or removal from the world stage?

They bicker and squabble like old married couples of shotgun weddings? Misery loves company, and they cannot stand happiness anywhere, assign external blame for their unhappiness? Frank Herbert's The White Plague, 1982, or the Seth Rogen, et al, stoner flick, The Cabin in the Woods, 2012, not at all like those though on the expressway to the same Big Bash ballpark?

Anywhere near the above for either title developed soon, I'd be hopelessly engaged. I'd pass on the other titles unless word-of-mouth buzz surpassed the background noise.

That's scary. While the details for both titles are different, the general satirical thrust is correct. Ask Not is about a broken curmudgeon being forced to decide a royal succession; "Don't blame me! You asked for my opinion, now deal with it." The second, Shadow Government, sets up the premise that such a government can only operate in secret. In a future world where there are no secrets, how would you keep one that big?

Phil.

PS: I kinda want to start with The Everyman Protocol. I think it's something I can have some fun with before I get all serious.

Though no projections presented this post per moi for "The Everyman Protocol," maybe I'd give it a third-place gander. Sublime satire appeals nonetheless, I could imagine, though.
