This book began as incredibly dull for me, but once I found the hook (which was about 30 pages in) I've really enjoyed it. Anyone else ever pick this up?

Is that by James Hogan? If so, I've read it, but it's been a LONG time. I remember liking the book and the ideas it expressed.

Yeah it is by James Hogan, and it from a loooong time ago, haha. But it's actually 3 books in one, sort of. At least my copy is. I haven't finished it yet, but so far I've liked it.

I read it years ago when it first came out ('75 I think?) and recently re-read it. I'm amazed that the technical aspects don't seem to hokey, even after all this time. I really enjoyed it.
