Okay, time to let the cat out of the sack.

I never read anything Elric related. I know. Shame on me. The thing is, today I got "Stealer of Souls" from a friend. Is this a good start for an Elric Dummy?

I'm not entirely sure...I pulled the then-six books from my shelf, old DAW Books editions from the seventies, and, I gather, they've been through several editions (and titles) since, with what later revisions and additions, I don't know. And my memory of their contents is, well, hazy at best.

Probably the best point for the beginner would be The Dreaming City a. k. a. Elric of Melnibone, which, unless it's been supplanted by something else, is the first book in the series. (Stealer of Souls is fourth.)

I do remember the end / punchline of Stormbringer, sixth / last (probably) fairly well, and liked that volume better than the five that came before.

Anybody else? Somebody 'round here must've read them more recently than I did...

I'd start at the beginning. The first couple of novels were shorts stories originally, but there is a sort of serial continuity to them, so best to start at the beginning. They are short by today's standards and read quickly. Very good read. One of my favorites.

Reviving this post.

I read online that Elric of Melnibone is widely considered the best starting point for the Elric series. Is this the best place to start for reading Michael Moorcock in general? I think I am putting him next on my reading list.

I also see he has a "best of" short story collection that came out fairly recently.

Yes, it's a pretty good place to start reading Moorcock and see how crazy he is. [Big Grin]
