I have always known there is more to our world than that which is taught to us by the masters. Perhaps this is the fault of the Le Vu Lan. Her rule offends me. The very fact that there are others in the House of the Le vu Lan better suited to rule our tribe offends me all the more. My mother would be the most suibtable to replace her. She is respected by the other women of the house and I, her son am the most respected of the men. I am, afterall, their hero. I am the greatest Koro Koro handler and each turn, I protect the bouty of our tribe, of the house of the Le vu Lan. I lead my koro into battle against the swarms of Dendrobes which threaten to ravish our crops each season.

To think that she can win back the favor of her house by creating a new hero, her young son Dogen. To think that he is capable of impressioning thirteen Koro Koro eggs upon their hatching. Thirteen... It strains my mind to lead seven birds. They consume my every ounce of concentration.

When she fails...when he fails. I will be their to pick up the pieces. And when I discover the founders technology we will no longer have the need for koro because I have heard of a device which will stop the dendrobes forever. My mother will step up to lead the House...to become the new Le vu Lan, and I will crush her son into the ground.

Jun- is it your pride that is offended, or is your mother really more suited to rule than the Le Vu Lan? Is your desire to have power, recognition, and honor blinding to you the real virtues of the Le Vu Lan and her son? If her son is a hero, capable of extraordinary things not even you can master, isn't that a reason for you and all your people to rejoice? Isn't the stability, peace, and unity of the entire House more important that your pride?

It is the teachings--they hinder us. Teach us to want nothing, wish nothing for ourselves. They hide the truth about those that founded our planet. We came from the stars yet we have no technology except for propane furnaces to warm our greenhouses.

Her child isn't a gift from the gods. If he becomes a hero it is because he was groomed to be so. No one has ever impressioned more than 11 Koro... The Great Du Mu, and it drove him mad. He hasn't spoken to anyone in over twenty turns when the last of his flock finally died.

My mother is better suited because she can sense the will of the people, and she doesn't surpress her own will as the teachings prescribe.

It will take someone brave enough to reject the diciplines. I have that strength-- even if I must murder him.

Haven't you ever wondered WHY your people are taught the way they are? There must be a good reason.

If your ancestors were as advanced as you say, don't you think they must have had a reason for imposing these restrictions that far surpasses your understanding?

And what makes you think you're any better suited than those around you? You haven't been taught anything they haven't been taught. If you and your mother don't suppress you own will for the good of the people, doesn't that make you selfish, and thus, inherently unsuitable leaders?

And do you really think murder will benefit your community? It will tear it apart. Why would you want that?

One more follow up question:
Who do you love more than anyone else in the entire world (and you can't tell me it's your mother, because I won't believe you)?

Love? Who am I to love? What am I to love? How can I love my mother? The house of the Le vu Lan iss a house of women. I haven't spoken with my mother since I was weaned. Boys are raised in sepparate houses and during the ceremony of passage most boys are sent away to other tribes when they come of age. I was chosen to honor my village as a Koro Koro handler because my mother has a powerful presence in the house of the Le Vu Lan.

What I have learned of my world, of our founders, is what I have sought to learn myself. I first learned of the founders technology from the traveller, the man who collects Koro eggs for trade. He told me of a band of tribeless men who have seggregated themselves to form a new tribe. They are thinkers like me who question the world and wish to learn more of the founders.

Who has the right to keep this knowledge from us?

So if your mother didn't raise you, who did? What were they like? Were they loving or cruel? Do you remember them? Are they still in your life? Are the memories of your childhood pleasant or painful? Would you choose to have your children raised in the same way you were?

We are raised by a Tenzo, Our teacher from the time of our second turn. All conceptions happen in the same lunar cycle every four years so all children are the same age and are raised together. We are taught the diciplines and the Way Seeking mind. I had no sadness. I had no longings. I cannot expect to raise my children another way for I will have no children. It is not or will ever be permitted for a young man to cocieve with a woman of the house in which they were concieved.

None of those I was raised with are still in my tribe except for Wammu. He also was chosen as a Koro handler and has three five Koro. The others were sent off to find places in other tribes during the ceremony of passage. I do not long for them.

Why is that? What purpose does such an edict serve? Do you resent it? What a silly questions ... of course you resent it. But what would you change and why?

Are "mistakes" ever made with this rule. By that I mean accidental, unauthorized pregnancies?

You don't long for anyone you grew up with, you don't love your mother, you profess to love no one, not even yourself. So what do you value, what do you love? Isn't there any happiness or peace in your life? Who are you friends? Who do you admire? Who do you confide in? If the answer to all these question is "no one," how do you feel about your isolation? Doesn't it matter to you that you have no real bonds to anyone?

I understand why you would be prevented from concieving with a woman of your house. Presumably they're all related to you. But if you are a talented Koro Koro handler, as you say, wouldn't it be desirable for your people to have that talent preserved? Isn't there any system that would permit you to take a mate from another house, even if only temporarily? If, as you say, all conceptions occur at the same time, you would presumably only have to be absent from your tribe for a month or so.

Are you friends with any other Koro Koro handlers besides Wammu? At least you have something in common with them.

Are you considering joining the new tribe that seeks knowledge?

There are may reasons I could never unite with a woman; for one the link I share with my Koro is indescribable. We are one--united. My flock would become irradic if I were in a state of extacy. Their thoughts, their emotion become mine. I can feel their hunger in the pit of my own stomach. I can feel their huntlust. It warms my blood and I can taste their carnage in my jaws just as in their voracious maws. I however, have the ability to supress much of their primal nature. They, on the otherhand, are not as controlled. I must always keep my emotions in check or else they act upon them.

I am friends with no one. I do not require the company of others. Wammu is a koro handler, yes, but I do not rely on him.

Yes, I am considering leaving my tribe to join those that seek the knowledge of the founders. There is much to learn and I seek answers.

The Le vu Lan is the keeper and writer of the scrolls of linneage. She alone choses those who are to concieve and keeps thorough records of said linneage. The scrolls are as ancient as the tribes of our world. Each tribe is a direct decent of the founders bloodlines.

We are taught to keep lust from our hearts and I never have sucombed to such.
