Meditations on Middle Earth
New writing on the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien Includes a Literary Manifesto by OSC
OSC's essay was singled out for the only negative comment by the reviewer at Publisher's Weekly - but it's no surprise, because Card used the essay as an opportunity to explain in detail why "wild" stories like Lord of the Rings are superior to "domesticated" stories designed to be decoded by English professors.
Naturally, those who are true believers in the things their English teachers taught them will be outraged. Card has long been a heretic in the eyes of that particular secular religion - and this essay might be viewed as his theses tacked to the church door.
The book is available everywhere in hardcover.
