OK, so Catalonia has no great ice cream tradition of its own. That doesn't mean you can't sneak off and enjoy a borrowing from the Italian tradition! We had ice creams in some of the best restaurants in Barcelona, but we kept coming back to Gelateria Dino because they had stracciatella (chocolate chip) and pistachio and raspberry that would hold their own anywhere in the world except next door to the gelateria at the Trevi Fountain in Rome, and there's no shame in coming in second to that.

The ice cream is expensive — expect to spend a couple of bucks for a small cup! — but it's worth it. In fact, to us it was even worth a special cab ride on the night we stayed at the Hilton (courtesy of Delta Air Lines, after our flight was cancelled), which is nowhere near that part of town. And even when we were footsore and blistered from walking for hours throughout the old city and then up and down the steep hills of Parque Güell (which you have to see; one of the greatest public spaces in the world; designed by Gaudí), we still walked the long blocks from Hotel Calderon because ice cream like this is not to be ignored.

Tell them the fat bearded American with bad Spanish who always had a big cup of pistacho y straciatelli sent you. They won't give you a discount or anything, but I want them to know I really liked their gelato.
