. . . and Kristine, and whoever else behind the scenes at Hatrack made it possible to get that wonderfully inexpensive -- and autographed, to boot -- copy of First Meetings.
I had bought it for a student, so I was saving it for after her finals -- it seemed too cruel to give her a book in the middle of them! Her last final was Friday, and I had asked to her to come find me when she was done. She did, and was absolutely thrilled by the book.
Even more so when she saw the autograph.
This is one of those students who makes teaching worthwhile. She soaks up knowledge, and if she doesn't understand something, stays after class to ask questions. When there was a particular topic that the class had a tough time with, and there was general whining that I should reteach it (a third time ), she and one other student figured it out over the weekend, and came in and taught it to the class -- and were EXCITED about having figured it out.
Thank you for helping me give her something special.

I took two weeks off - first because I was in NYC for BEA and the Audie awards, but had only a dial-up connection in my hotel. The two times I went to a nearby Kinko's to connect high-speed, it was in order to get some fiction (my Mazer story) finished and then do my review column.
Then when I got home, I immediately plunged into teaching an acting workshop, which consumes my days. I was supposed to write Christmas at Battle School this week, and instead I've written nothing - least of all getting online.
So naturally, when I have to get up early tomorrow because I'm being interviewed by a Greek documentary film crew (heaven knows why), I'm staying up self-destructively late in order to post on Hatrack. Go figure.
Meanwhile, though, Rivka, thanks for believing that something signed by me would be a gift worth giving. I'm glad it was happily received.
