which is the first thing that came up in my Google search, but I'm not sure how to find out whether it's a good service, or whether I can trust them with my book, which is madly rare and absolutely irreplaceable (at least for any reasonable sum of money). Any suggestions?

Kind of depends on where you are. Are you in a large metropolitan city? If so, you might have one local.
A few years back I needed to have a very important book rebound, and there was a bookbinder here in the city that could do it for me. I felt much better about that, because I could hand delivery it and pick it up, so didn't have to worry about losing it in travel....

If this book is as "rare and irreplaceable" as you say, you might want to reconsider getting it rebound. It may devalue it.

I had a book rebound by this guy. He did a marvellous job, and his portfolio (some of it is online) was amazing. Whether you want to ship your book to Canada r not is another matter.

Valentine--I'm not worried about the book's value, because I don't want to sell it, now or ever. I just want a decent copy so it'll last for a while longer so my mum will have it to read to her grandchildren. It's not absolutely irreplaceable; it's just beyond my budget to replace it.
The library idea is a good one though. I'll look into that.
