I've been planning this for a while. It was supposed to happen about 3 weeks ago, but all my subterfuge and misdirection was ruined by the hospitalisation of my step-grandfather-in-law on the day I was going to propose. He passed last week and the entire family was nudge-nudge, wink-winking at us during the wake, having heard from Jus' dad that the engagement was close.
This week we had a high-flying business woman friend of our in town, we had dinner together and while Jus was indisposed I quickly laid out my plan.
Yesterday, our friend called Jus to tell her she was still in town and wanted Jus to join her for breakfast followed by a girly shopping day in Melbourne (the fashion capital of Australia, where we live).
The hotel where our friend was staying is special to us, it has a very romantic dining room and one of the best wine cellars in Melbourne.
Jus almost tumbled to my ruse because I shaved this morning, but I allayed her suspicions. I left early, claiming a business breakfast, and got changed at a friend's place into my new clothes. I beat her to the restaurant and the already alerted waitstaff hid me in preparation for Jus' arrival.
When she arrived, they told her our friend was on her way down and that champagne was on the way. Jus interrogated the waiter: "So Tracy is really coming??!?" - he was a champ, playing dumb and pretending that not only was our friend indeed on her way down, but that he had no idea why she would think otherwise.
Immediately after pouring Jus a glass of Pol Roger champagne, I popped around the corner and popped the question.
It took her at least a minute to stop giggling and gibbering and remember to say 'yes'.
We had one hell of a romantic breakfast our friends met us with another bottle of champagne and (an unexpected!) bottle of tequila back at our place. After which we went to see our football team THRASH the opposition (one of the best national games of the season) - full irony was intact. At the footy, we met these really cool bunch of people from interstate and wound up spending the entire night in their company - drinks at a great bar and then dinner at a chinese restaurant. The moment we told one of the girls we'd just gotten engaged (this was still at the footy) she jumped up and went and bought us a round of drinks and got jus a bunch of tulips - incredible! Even in a town known for its friendliness, this was pleasantly excessive.
We've just gotten home, we're really trashed and I'm staying up drinking water. Jus is in bed and doing her usual totally refusing to drink water - an early hangover is guaranteed, but it's part of her charm.
So anyway - I'm engaged!

Dude - today has involved about five or six bottles of champagne, a bottle of tequila and I have no idea how much beer. Trashed doesn't even begin to cover it.

Allow me to be the first to wish you a Mazel Tov!
And, you DO type well while under the influence. I've been the object of ridicule more than once for the marked deterioration of my typing skills after much less booze than you consumed. My fingers only want to hit the cracks between the keys.
I wish you all the best. Be good to Jus in the morning, won't you?
