So* for the first time I've managed to accumulate enough mileage with one airline (Northwest) to qualify for a free domestic roundtrip.
And I'm at NW's website and logged in and trying to make a reservation next month to go from Newark to Portland... and I've tried several dates and a few different airports and the website keeps telling me there's no award reservations available.
I'm ignorant (no longer blissfully)... do I need to call the airline directly? Or do I need to make a reservation a year in advance? Only travel to South Dakota on Wednesdays? Ack!!

Yeah, its rough. They normally want well more then 30 days notice. Calling the airline probably won't help, but if couldn't hurt. They might be able to find a good date better then you can.

I usually get farther by calling rather than doing it on-line. Hotel points are easier to redeem.
