...or has my computer been hit by malware that drops down an advertising menu everytime I initiate a search?

my guess is you have some sort of malware on your computer...you should run spybot or something similar.
(I just did a search on google, and no advertising box came down...just the usual paid links on the side)

At a minimum, scan & repair with 2 or 3 different tools. In addition to Spybot, I recommend the free kaspersky online scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/
Or post in the malware forums at techspot.com - you can usually get fairly comprehensive advice & assistance with ensuring your system is "clean." This sometimes goes beyond just using the available scan & repair tools.

Nah, not after I click "Google Search". Instead a dropdown menu appears upon entry of the first letter of a search term, with the menu changing for each subsequent letter.

Are you sure it's advertising? Mine is set up so that it calculates the amount of hits per topic and changes depending on what they think you might be searching for.

yeah, i have it too, it's really beneficial actually. all you have to do if you want to get rid of it is right click in the search bar and click on "show suggestions". It's not advertising, I suspect it's like adfectio says and it gives suggestions based on most popularly searched terms given what words or letters are currently entered.
