Does SC have state disability? I have never heard of such a thing. All I know of is worker's comp, private disability insurance, government/military disability, or social security.

A little more information is needed. Why is your friend on disability?

No idea about SC, but we do have it in California. http://www.edd.ca.gov/disability/

Edit: Google implies that SC has no equivalent. Just SSI/SSDI, which is federal (and thus should be the same in every state).

Your friend should at least call her disability office. They will answer the question.

When looking around online, it sounds like the benefits are only for 52 weeks no matter what. They should transfer to another state, because your friend paid for the benefit through payroll taxes. After 52 weeks, your friend would file a social security claim.

On a personal note, I am shocked California voters pay this. I pay about the same amount for private disability insurance, and the benefits last until age 65. I would also get 60% of my salary, compared to 55% on the state plan.

Yep, there are only a few states that have a disability program. South Carolina is not one of them.

Most of these states require employee contributions to the state disability fund as part of their payroll taxes.

I would have your friend see if she/he qualifies for federal disability benefits through social security.

California is very employee friendly, and some cities in California (Such as San Francisco) have their own laws that benefit employees even more than the state laws!
