I won't know until the 22nd of this month whether I can come or not, even though I was pretty much figuring as a definite before. Events have conspired since to change plans. (Ciara and Jake bred themselves to each other without my consent ) You see, if Ciara is pregnant, she is due Feb 23rd. Plus or minus 3 days in either direction is not uncommon. And if she did go into labor that weekend we'd be looking at possibly mildly premature puppies so it is even more important that I'm there.
I *think* she's pregnant and overall I'm not unhappy about the pregnancy even though it was unplanned. (No puppy abortions or anything, not worth the risk to her.) But, I won't know for sure until January 22nd when we have an ultrasound. If she is pregnant and puppies are emminent it puts a kink in plans where I am concerned, though I'll definitely still be at the wedding!

Oh, man. If AJ doesn't go, who's going to drive the Chi/Wis group? I'd really rather not actually be behind the wheel going to Iowa in February.
Err...that sounds kinda insensitive - AJ, of course I'd miss your company too! I guess my pragmatism stepped ahead of my compassion there for a bit. I'm sorry!
edit: Der...Minnesota, Jules. Minnesota. But still.

I'm sorry, Vana, but as I said in the other thread that's why I'm alerting you to the possibility now... As I said in this and other threads it was an "unplanned" pregnancy, I didn't really *want* puppies this particular February. I had other things going on!
I should have enough homes for them though I think, if they are coming. It depends on how many are show quality and how many are pet quality.

I just thought of a remote posibility that would work if you guys had leeway in your schedules. The only way I would be able to come if she *is* pregnant, is if we bumped the date a week earlier, to the 11th. But, this is kind of a late time to be doing that and I suspect peoples schedules have already become too rigid for that.
And there is the possiblity she isn't pregnant and I'm getting you guys worried about nothing, however the signs to this point say she is, though it isn't confirmable til the ultrasound.

Oh, AJ, I'm not upset, just trying to solve the potential problem. I know it'll work out, one way or another!

I'm actually hosting something else on the 12th now... which I could possibly move, but let's burn that bridge when we come to it. We'll find out in a little over a week if there are puppies coming, and then we can make a decision.

I wish I could go for other reasons too. But life doesn't always cooperate, even when it is being good.

We should probably start thinking about how the Wisconsin/Chicago group is going to be traveling, now that we know AJ can't make it. Or did it get discussed somewhere else and I missed it?

It's still 2/19. I have a prior commitment the weekend before, or I would happily change it so AJ could come.

So, what are you Chicago-area lasses going to do for transport? Christy and Sara are a pretty obvious pair; would either of them be willing to take riders?

It's a good thought, but I'm not going to be able to take more than just Christy. However, we could caravan (i.e., do multiple cars and drive together), and that might allay some fears about driving in winter.
Seriously, unless there is a snowfall that day, the roads are generally perfectly clear. They have a lot of infrastructure to ensure that things keep running smoothly here.
Caravaning sounds like a viable possibility. Sounds like Vana, blackwolve, and xnera were all interested in going. Anyone willing to drive with us? If there are no cars amongst y'all that you trust for a long trip, how about a $19/day weekend special for a rental? I can help figure out how to swing that, or I can help coordinate bus/train schedules.

Actually, you can pick up a mid-size car at O'Hare through Enterprise for $21/day over the weekend, unlimited miles in IN, IL, and WI. Outside those states, you have 200 free miles per day, so it would essentially be unlimited mileage for this trip.
There are also $9.99/day cars from Enterprise locations in the suburbs, but they are selling out pretty quickly at that special rate. They also would come with effectively free mileage.

For all those who can't attend the henna party, might I suggest getting the henna and paraphenalia and joining in from home? You could even do a web cam thing.

I have no problems driving in winter, or for long distances--I just don't have a car to do so. So one of those rentals would be perfect. I thought about a rental myself, but thought it would be waaaaay too expensive, or would not allow that many miles.
One problem with a rental is that I don't have car insurance, so I would have to pay for it on the rental. I don't know if that would restrict me from getting one of the cheap deals.

*sigh* I guess I can drive, if people can get to Rockford. I could take up to three people with me, though luggage might be a little tight. I'll have to ask for help with gas, though. And I'll have to have really good directions before we head out.
How long is this drive, anyway? If we start out Friday morning and leave on Sunday, will that be okay? Or were people planning to leave Saturday and come home on Monday? Or leave Friday night and come home...I have on idea. We need to figure it out, though, so I know what time to request off work.

For the people who are coming, what sort of a time frame works for you? Are you taking off work Friday and driving up in the morning? It's almost exactly 6 hours from Chicago. How long will you be able to stay?
dkw has to head back to Iowa Saturday night in order to preach Sunday morning. So if you could come Friday during the day, that would maximize time with her, which is kinda the point. Everyone is, of course, welcome to stay over Saturday and head back Sunday sometime. "Sometime" meaning "certainly not before brunch."
It looks like it will be a small enough group that we can all just stay at dkw's and my parent's house... I'll come and stay there, too, for the duration. My house isn't big enough, and that way we won't have to split up if we want to stay up half the night giggling. Also, they have a fabulous sledding hill and a firepit, so you might want to bring outdoors clothes. Um, and a swimsuit. Anyone who is interested, of course, can take a side-trip to my place to see my remodeling projects.

I was thinking driving up Friday and coming back Sunday.
I have no problems with finding my way to Rockford, though I would have to be picked up at the train/bus/whatever station. Also have no problems chipping in for gas.
I'm really really swamped right now, and not checking Hatrack often at all, so if you need to get in touch with me, drop me an email. xnera23 at gmail dot com is the best one these days.

If Vana and xnera come together (with xnera finding her way to Chicago and then chipping in for gas), then we can see if we can figure out how to caravan together to St. Paul. I can also chip in on gas for Vana -- just let me know how much you need. It looks like it's about 250 miles from Madison, which means about a tank or so each way, very roughly.
Christy and I were looking at going on Friday and coming back Sunday. We'll take you up on the Friday night accomodations, but I may have a hotel room voucher at the Millenium hotel (downtown?) to use up. I haven't been there yet, but it sounds beautiful, and I would love to take advantage of that and snooze early on Saturday night.

Yes, the Millenium is downtown Minneapolis. If you do that, we really should go to Hell's Kitchen for brunch Sunday. I generally try to take visitors there anyway, because the food is fabulous.
I'm so excited to see y'all again/at all!

Hey, it's getting close! We should talk about what we're doing...
Besides henna, does anyone have anything in particular they'd like to do while in town? Here's kinda what dkw and I talked about:
Friday night dinner at Port of Beruit restaurant... local middle eastern restaurant with bellydancers Friday and Saturday nights. The food in general is pretty good, but in particular they have a Mezza deal where if two or more people order it they bring out little dishes of all sorts of tasty appetizer type food, and then follow it with your choice of skewers. Oh, and the dancers are mostly teachers from where dkw, KrabbyPatty and I used to take lessons.
Saturday brunch in at our parent's house, and then retire to my place for henna in the late morning through early afternoon.
We thought bellydancers at dinner Friday would make it a bit of a theme weekend, but that's certainly open for debate. Other notes: if there is snow, my parents have a fabulous sledding hill and more different kinds of sled than you can shake a stick at. They also have an outdoor hot tub. And, of course, we'll have games around for Saturday evening, including Cranium, Fluxx, Apples to Apples, and Crononauts, at least. Depending on what dkw brings up. And if anyone's interested there is a rather large mall in town.

That sounds like fun! I've never been to the Mall, myself, so it might be fun to at least see it. But I won't be heartbroken if we don't go.

Two, are the drivers finalized? I need to get out directions... Sara, Vana, and Ryuko, right? Anyone else? Ryuko, your directions will be extra-special detailed.

I dunno, if my friend is coming she might want to drive separately, since she's going to the formal dance that weekend and will probably want to leave early.
Otherwise it might be just me. I invited pseudo-hobbit, but it's her birthday weekend and she's spending it with her boyfriend.

Well, Dana has to drive down to Iowa Saturday afterwards, so it can't go too long. Are you going to come out to dinner with us Friday night, or just do the henna on Saturday?
(I bought the henna tonight!)

(sigh) I'd love to go out to dinner with you all, but my aunts are driving up from IL and I'm obligated to spend some time with them. (Not that I don't want to, and the enjoyment factor goes significantly up when I think of the fact that the one aunt has finally gotten divorced from her TERRIBLE HUSBAND. ) So I don't know if I can. Probably not.

Sorry to hear that, Ryuko. Then if you're just coming Saturday, do you need directions to my place again, or do you remember how to get there?
Oh, btw, everyone, I3 will be joining us for dinner Friday. Since there are other men coming to that part of the weekend, I figured we could open it up. Besides, he owes Bob a drink.
