As for James Dean, I never got the sense that he was all that great an actor. He was in one movie, the right movie at the right time, and he died young (and recklessly), making him a romantic legend. Based on one performance, though, how can you really judge the totality of his talent?
He was in THREE wonderful movies giving an AMAZING performance.

GIANT <--- my personal Favorite

Rebel Without a Cause <--- Amazing

East of Eden <--- Great

James Dean lit up the screen with an energy never seen before and never seen since.

GIANT

I love, love, love this movie.

Heck, I love this movie so much I stole the name from James Dean's Character [Jett Rink] fused them together and made it the hero of one of my screenplays last name [Grayce Jettrink].

This movie is on scope and scale with Gone With The Wind, and I don't know of many more scenes that are more profound than the "Pedro!!!!!!" scene.

The whole movie is beautiful, awesome, and amazing. It absolutely goes down as one of my favorite movies of all time and as one of the best movies ever made.

I feel the need to mention a few things about Giant. I spent two weeks in the town where it was filmed (Marfa), and that wasn't the good part. I got to see the test showing of the premier of the Digital version (DVD) a few weeks ago, at a restored historical hotel there.

It indeed is a great movie. And the town hasn't changed as much as most people probably would like.

Is it just me, or does James Franco have an uncanny resemblence to him? I saw him the tv biopic about James Dean, but then when I watched Pearl Harbor the other day, I wondered aloud if it was the guy from the James Dean movie and my husband said, "I don't know, but if it isn't, it should have been."
