lol, end thread
` This time he is gay. (Well at least he's not straight.)
Samprimary, sorry to so closely "borrow" your original thread, but the last one drifted a bit for this posting to be relevant there.
I know this is old news, BUT besides personal and political ramifications, I just read a recent New York Times article that reported his situation may also have legal ramifications that he will very much not like.
You couldn't find a more poetic irony. Rekers may have helped in a greater way to forward gay rights, (which he has been so strongly against), than most gay rights activists. Truly, who could make up stuff like this?

I just assume that nearly all conservative christian anti-gay activists are having gay sex on the side and that everyone at NARTH is. I mean, it's just common sense by now.

With most people I assume the are straight till proved otherwise. With conservative religious types though I have just started assuming they live in Narnia. They get caught with boys way to often for it to be a statistical anomaly.
I love the Rekers story though. His constant attempts to deflect the story just got so wild and outrageous.

I actually find myself wondering whether organizations like NARTH exist at least in part to make it easier for self-loathing gay men to find each other.

I don't think that is really the case. It's just that self loathing gays join groups like that as either a way to overcome their urges or to deflect attention away from themselves. After all Rekers wasn't as far as we know hooking up wit other NARTH members. He hired a rentboy from a male escort site who was as young as his son.

Perhaps they have just the right combination of desperate desire to be cured and religious conviction that it should be possible. This makes the organizations that promote the latter idea attractive, and helps reinforce the bias against evidence to the contrary.

I think that's pretty much it. Almost everytime I hear a right wing anti-gay type ranting they end up acting like homosexual sex is so overwhelmingly tempting that if it's allowed then no more children will ever be born.
I used to be so confused by that implied argument. It's not like most men get turned on when they see attractive men. At most only 10% and probably more like 5% of men are attracted to other men. Then after a few scandals it hit me. THEY feel that temptation for other men but can't admit they are homosexual or bisexual so they just assume that all men feel that temptation. If all men feel that temptation then OMG if we allow people to be homosexual without consequences then our species it DOOMED!!! Once that little epiphany hit it all fell into place. The endless series of conservative antigay crusaders gay sex scandals and reading up on reaction formation and my good old grandmothers favorite quote "The lady doth protest to much" All further reinforced the now obvious notion that antogay religious types live in Narnia.

So who was the last person on this forum to use NARTH to support their position on homosexuality? Just wondering.

It's almost kind of mean to pick on Christian anti-gay activists, at this point. In a few years the only anti-gay activists out there will be devout Muslims and Fred Phelps.

No where near as mean as the "GOD HATES FAGS" signs, and atleast we are making fun of them via the internet like decent people.

Fred Phelps is the best argument against Christianity and organized religion around.

It's spelled "fellatious", dude.
To be precise, Fred Phelps is an excellent argument for empiricism. So is KoM, for that matter. Neither are empiricists.

Fred Phelps is a convincing example of a bad human being. His problem isn't irrationality, it's extraordinary meanness.
That's not to say that if he was somehow made to limit his activities and arguments to things that could be justified with evidence and reason that he wouldn't, in all likelihood, be a somewhat better human being.
I'm just saying he's a rather unique example of rabid bigotry, and he doesn't really represent any large group at all, so his existence doesn't really discredit one. The fallacy (not a root of "fellatious" - heh) - is generalizing from an extreme example.
(The argument for empiricism seems better than the argument against organized religion.)

There is no word "fellatious." Fallacies are fallacious. Unless steven (and scifibum) are making a bawdy play on another word, in which case it missed the funny by a little bit, at least for me.

I would say that's true for all humans, everywhere, at all times, period. Extreme atheists/skeptics are just as guilty as Fred Phelps, when it comes to violating the rules of empiricism, don't you think?

Just want to point out that I was merely chuckling at the (assumed) pun, and used the correct word the first time.

I started reading the thread in reverse order, and I thought "fellatious" was pretty funny until I got to the post where it was actually used. I realize the opening to make the joke was fairly narrow, but I think it would have worked better earlier in the thread.

Reading the various Rekers articles has been interesting. As much as I hate Rekers I kind of feel sorry for him. He is still trying to deny what happened. Even though we have photo, the testimony of the boy, and the very fact that he hired the boy from a very obvious escort site. I mean that is serious denial. Then we have that he spent so much money to get the escort and take him of a 10 day vacation overseas and all he did was a naked hot oil massage every day and a guarantee of two shared meals per day. It's like he has one foot way in the water but can't admit it. If you are going to A have an affair, B pay a lot of money to have it with a prostitute and C go on a 10 day trip with said prostitute shouldn't you at least go all the way? He has destroyed his career, ruined his name (at least in circles where that name is anything but a curse already), opened himself to possible litigation and probably turned his family and church against him and for what? Getting to second base 10 times.

Self-loathing, denial, ruin, cognitive dissonance, secret rendezvous with gayboys while preaching desperate pseudoscience. The absolute wreck of this man's life is a sterling example of one of the many reasons why people's tripe about how homosexuality is a moral disease that can be 'cured' is actively harmful as well as stupid.
I hope only the worst on his institution and the bodies of thought that feed it. As for him, i consider him beyond help.

Not meaning to resurrect such an old thread, but couldn't resist after reading the headline: "Anti-gay marriage lawmaker admits paying $80 to meet MALE teen - but INSISTS he's not gay "
quote:"I want to know what upstairs in my brain went off that sent me down a road of self-destruction," he said. "Somewhere upstairs a button got pushed, and I want to know why. People keep asking: 'What were you thinking?' I honestly don't know. It's as simple as that."
Well if you have switches in your brain that important that turn on and off without you being able to switch them back, you may need to resign your post until you can start acting like an adult again.

you've been living as an unhappily closeted gay dude for most of your life, and it's probably very important for both you and your wife that you come to terms with this in a healthy and appropriate manner. oh hey and if you decide instead to let the cure-gays come 'fix' you like you think you can (to go on to future discreet rendezvous), at least NARTH will make sure you are in ... heh, like company, as it were

I'm not sure what his politics re: gay rights are. Anyway, I think he might've been able to swing it (no pun intended) if it had just been nude photos. I mean...maybe wing and a prayer kind of maybe. People might buy the 'I'm looking good, wanted some affiramtion' schtick. But the straight-to-naughty bits shot, not-so-much.

I don't know, I'm straight but would have no problem working as a lobbyist for gay rights. For the situations to be somewhat symmetrical, the person would have to (1) have claimed to be exclusively homosexual as a way of getting the job and (2) worked against the rights of heterosexuals with this position.
Since gay/lesbian lobbyists don't actually do number (2), it doesn't seem like you'd get much comedic value.

Anecdotally, I've been told that it can be difficult being a bi person working on LGBT issues, because even though the B is right there in the acronym, there's still this cultural assumption that if you're dating someone of the opposite gender you're not really LGBT. So you'd better stick with dating the same gender, just to make it clear that you aren't straight.
I'm also told there's a fair amount of appearance-policing for women working on LGBT issues; if you identify as lesbian or bi, you're expected to a certain extent to dress the part, to keep your hair and nails short, to not wear really femme clothes or make-up. Not, of course, that there isn't plenty of appearance-policing for women in other careers! It just tends to go in the opposite direction.
