Was anyone else reminded at all by Starship Troopers? I know there are plenty of distinct differences but still, I couldn't get the thought out of my head. By the way, I refer to the book, not the movie.

I havent read the Book or watched the movie, but from what I hear it sounds remotely like the Formic Wars. I think they might have got part of the idea from OSC.

Starship Troopers was written many years before Ender's Game.

OSC has never red Starship Troopers.

Man, that movie was awful. Does anybody believe that people that attractive would EVER run around with guns, shooting space bugs?

Heh, the movie was much worse than the book; the movie was just idiotic. Why would they charge the bugs?

The similiarity is "bugs in space" which is a pretty common sci-fi motif. And anyways, Starship Troopers (the book) is far more a political tract than a sci-fi story.

Have you actually read it? Most people who say that havn't actually read the book; it obviously has many political motifs but most of it is a sci-fi yarn.

it does have a large political underpinning, but it is even a military novel before it is scifi.

Definitely a military novel, definitely sci-fi, and definitely a vehicle for discussing an interesting political concept (only those who invest in the system should get to run the system). And yeah, I've it several times, along with a lot of Heinlein's more YA-targeted work. I'm just saying that in terms of cool sci-fi ideas it isn't Heinlein's richest book.

You could say just as much that it is a political book as Ender's Game is a psychology book.

In the tripod of my favorite books, there are Ender's Game, Dune and Starship Troopers.

Starship Troopers is a book on soldierly. That and as talsmitde said so well, an interesting political system.

As to the "space bugs", both versions had "queens" although in ST (it's been a while so forgive me if I'm rusty) the queens merely breed, while "brain bugs" do the higher level thinking. In both versions the bugs have technology, and direct brain to brain communication.

P.S. Don't get me started on the movie. I hate it so much I would actually punch out Paul Verhoven given the chance.

The great thing about Starship Troopers is the concept that the franchise (right to vote) is limited to those who have served the country in military service. A friend and I read that book while we were doing our two weeks active duty for the national guard. We loved it.

It's not just military service, it's service to your country. Difficult and dangerous service that proves you are willing to put your own neck on the line for the good of society, or more to the point, willing to put the good of the group before your own personal good before you will be allowed a hand in deciding what is good for the group.

I liked Starship Troopers ok, but I wasn't "taken in" by it. It was a series of (rather interesting) philosophical (mostly dealing with politics and military) essays tied together with a VERY VERY loose story line that was not developed at all. While I respect the book and found it interesting, I did not find it "FUN", but it's as much sci-fi as, say, the homecomming series, though the homecomming series is a much better read.

I for one LOVED the movie. However, I was only 7 or 8 at the time, and was more caught up with the cool looking bugs and inter-character drama. I cried when Dina Meyer died...no, I'm not kidding. [Roll Eyes]

Oh yes! What I originally was going to say, I did think of Starship Troopers when I read the book. Very much so, especially in consideration with the Formics (obviously). And yes, the book was a million times better than the movie. I consider them complete different entities, associated only by a common theme. They shouldn't have even used the same title for the movie.

I liked both "equally" in the sense that each were great and not really comparable to eachother.
