I teeter back and forth between being about form and being about function. On the one hand I have a certain amount of disdain for my cousin's stainless steel fridge. It screams "I am Jack's fridge," you know what I mean? If it was trendy, I think his condo would have a yin-yang coffee table too. [Wink]

</Fight Club reference>

But on the other hand I buy my computers from Apple. I prefer the look of the Nintendo GameCube to both of the competing consoles (though I bought it for the games), and if I were to buy a GBA it would be the GBA SP version. I have geek lust.

My disdain for "trendy" appliance looks also extends to looks in general, actually, while my love of sexy appliance looks comes from my love of sleek gadgets. Do these two things conflict? Do they have to conflict? Does it make me a hypocrite?

Yes. The gamecube is ass-ugly. [Smile]

I'm so sick of hand-washing my dishes that I'd give...well, I'd give a good amount to get a dishwasher. I don't care WHAT it would look like, as long as it washed dishes.

I like the GC becaus it's minimalist. I like Apple's new cases and laptops for the same reason. The iPod, too.

Oh, of course not, twinky! Geek lust is a good and proper feeling. Everyone should love their gadgets since gadgets need someone to care about them and appreciate them, not for looks alone, for heaven's sake! (what could possibly be more shallow and unimportant?), but for the inner beauty of their features.

Absolutely you are not a hypocrite. You (unlike your cousin) just have a deep understanding of what matters.

(However, you might want to see someone about that weird Apple thing.)

Geek lust is wonderful. As a mac user, I have to confess: When I bought new dishes for my apartment, I didn't want them to clash with my indigo iMac. . . .

My family thinks it's great I have a computer you can accessorize, so they've pretty much bought anything in that translucent "geekier-than-thou" color that comes along.

It's great.

I am also an appliance (amd specifically a mac) geek...in fact when my laptop ibook got stolen, my most urgent question to the insurer was 'can i get the same colour?'

Alas, they were out of stock so I got boring white. On the upside, it's a newer and better model...but not nearly so aesthetically pleasing [Smile]

*shudder* I'm a geek, but I'm completely devoid of geek "lust," as it's described here. It scares me.

So you had one of the toilet seat models, too? I've got a blueberry one as well, eventually aiming for the iceBooks. Or *drool* the 12" powerbook. My brother and his wife are sharing custody of my clamshell iBook right now, tho.

I had a blueberry 'toilet seat' model...which I quite liked
[Smile]
But now I have white one... the small screen one though - I want the BIG screen one!

iPods ROCK.

I haven't convinced myself to spend the money, yet, but I'm sorely tempted every time payday rolls around. And then I remember, "Oh yeah. Rent."

But I'm still tempted. . . ^_^

Yeah, rent's a pain. And food, uni fees, phone bills... but still.. a *ipod*

(I think it's slightly scary the amount I lust after a small white peice of technology)

>> *shudder* I'm a geek, but I'm completely devoid of geek "lust," as it's described here. It scares me. <<

Am I correct in inferring from this that you're more insterested in function than form? If so, then the crucial difference between you and me is that I like my gadgets to be sexy. Now, I'll grant that sexiness is boosted by functionality, but it is also influenced by form. [Smile]

I don't accessorize and match my hardware, though I do try to avoid blatant clashing (thus most of my peripherals are various shades of whites and greys). I prefer minimalist designs to flashy ones (thus my CRT iMac is graphite, not fruity or Flower Power).

I think my favourite computer case ever is the Shuttle SS51G. Soldam does some sexy versions of it, too. Small, sleek, but with all of the functionality of a full tower (less expandability, of course, since the SS51G is about the size of a toaster).

A close runner up is Apple's G4 Cube.

I don't lust over Alienware's cases; I definitely don't lust after custom jobs with glowing LEDs everywhere. Like I said, minimalist.

So appliances extend to household electronics?

I don't care how my fridge looks. I have no interest in having a sleek looking toaster or microwave. But man...I want my audio and video components to look good! And the entertainment centers that house them!

Certainly I lust over form. I can look at things and think, "wow, that's puuuuurty! Wish I had me one of those!" but when push comes to shove, I think I take function over form. Mostly because I'm such a freaking miser [Wink]

I, as you know, am prepared to pay extra (to a point) for a good-looking piece of gadgetry.

But conventional appliances? I'm not sure...
