No, hit the hearts, they replenish your life. Everytime you miss a creature, you lose a bit of life. You also lose life for hitting various other items. The early levels are very easy, but it becomes increasingly more difficult.

You can buy stuff in the shop. The hammers allow you to do more damage, like destroy the red guys in one hit instead of two. Later on, when things get really fast, you'll probably need to buy life as well.
Highest I've got so far is level 12.

When you bop somebody on the head, you sometimes get a prize, like a heart (restores a portion of your life - see the little hearts up at the top - they're your life) or a coin (money to buy stuff with at the little tree-house store).
Buying a better hammer (I recommend the silver hammer - #8) lets you bop the red guys in one shot (instead of 2) and lets you bop the bomb head guys (you can't do it with the original or bronze hammer). You can buy "wings" for your hammer, allowing you to bop stuff faster (#4, very useful - I highly recommend adding wings to your silver hammer) - it becomes necessary at the higher levels. You can buy more heart containers (#6) giving you an ability to store more life (you can buy up to 2 extra heart containers for a total of 6) and you can buy heart refills (#1, 2, and 3) - useful at the higher levels.
If you hit an empty space, you lose life. If you hit a mace or bomb, you lose life. If you hit one of the guys with a mace while they're swinging it, you lose life. If you hit the bomb head guys when their heads are bombs, you lose life. If you don't bonk a guy and let him ride down on his elevator, you lose life. If you hit a devil guy, you lose 1 coin. At the beginning of each level it'll show you how much life "points" you lose hitting the thing you're not supposed to hit.

You give my memory far too much credit... If I tried to get back to your and slacker's house without a refresher, I'd wind up driving in circles around the Arizona Mills parking lot. (actually, I fear winding up doing that any time I go to south Phoenix).
Oh, and is it just me or is it time for another Phoenix get together or something?
