I know Nero works well, but I don't want to pay for it, and for some reason the program I was using (the one that came with the DVD-RW drive) won't do DVD's, except for backup.
I know how to make an exact copy of a DVD (using DVDShrink and DVD Decrypter) , but I need a program that will take DivX files off my computer (not just DivX, but that among other types) and put them on to a DVD that my DVD player (which is fairly new, less than 1 year old) will play.
I can't seem to figure out how to do that with the programs I have. I wish I had not transfered the DVD to my computer, but I didn't realize how hard it would be to transfer it to another DVD.....

I'm almost certain that just about any DVD burning software that will put DivX in a DVD player readable format will cost you money. If you just want to get the DivX files pulled over to a DVD or CD, you can just drag and drop the file in "My Computer" if you're using Windows XP (Not sure about DVD's there. I haven't used a DVD burner before , but it works very well for CD's).

Boon, I did...and eithr it won't support that function, or I can't figure it out. I know that DVD Decrytper works to copy a DVD, but I can't get it to copy something that is on my hard drive.
I thought that was weird myself, but I fooled around with it for a while and culdn't figure that out.

I did, but one of two things happen when I do that.
First, when I open thesource file on my hard drive I can find the folder that the material is in, but when I click on the folder it is empty. When I do to play it on my computer though, it is full, and works fine.
Second, I just now tried to drag and drop a file into the program and it rejected it as an unsupported type of file...it is an XVID fromat.
Keep in mind that all this is new to me, as this is my first real home computer. I may be forgetting something silmple, or more likey as I am self-taught I may not have learned something important in the first place.

Not yet...although I don't know why I should have to....it si already on my computer....O can see if it needs compressed to fit, but I can't even get a small file to burn at this point.
Still, I can try it and see if it will owrk...but I have to get ready for work in a few, so I won't be able to do it until tonight.
Thanks for the help so far, veryone.....
Funny thing is that the same thing info-wise hapeened when I first forund out about bittorrent. dabbler helped me a lot, but I kept asking more and more questions, and once I had a basic knowledge from her I was able to access more and more about it.....
And now I am the guy my friends, most of whom have been messing around with computers for over a decade, call when they need advice on a bittorrent problem.
I hope I (we) can figure this out as well....

I have a follow-up related question. I have a student who has a free travel DVD she wants to show to her class durring a powerpoint presentation. The problem is that the teacher does not have a dvd-rom.
My question is: Is it possible to rip the dvd onto the network and then use a dvd reading program to read the files?
Even tho the teacher does not have a dvd-rom, can we intstall a DVD reading program on his computer he could use to read the saved files on the network?
If so, does anyone know anygood free dvd reading programs? I can use DVD shrink to put it on the network, but I need something to open it.

It's a program that generates a random, good (though not legit) serial number to input while installing a copy of Nero's software.
(And contrary to popular belief, it takes a bit more than having a few cracks around to really be 1337. Sorry to disappoint all those teenage haxors out there.)

lem, the only program that I've ever found that can read ripped DVD files straight from a hard drive and play them like it would play the disc is Intervideo WinDVD. Unfortunately, it's far from free.
If anyone knows of a free program that would do the same thing, I would also be interested.

I need a program to reformat the files on my hard drive to a DVD readable format. I tried WinAVI, adn had it figured out, but it puts a nag tag on teh mivie. I want it to be a free program if possible...and preferably one with a good on-line guide so I can try to learn how to use it.
