Story about first contact with aliens - filled with political intrigue, danger, narrow escapes, and the empath human pretty much "going native" and falling for one of the natives . . . (I know, pretty typical)
CJ Cherryh and key words like "golden" keep springing to mind, but my searching is proving fruitless . . .
There was a sequel to this book, also -
I first found it over a decade ago - it was a paperback, and somewhat (not much) older than that . . .

Well, when you say Cherryh and "golden" and "going native," I immediately think of the Faded Sun books. But an empath who goes native is more like, well, most of her other books.

What other tidbits do I remember? There was this odd chess-like board game they played, and I think the alien species were somewhat lizard-like . . . it seems like their young were hatched, but the egg-sack was ripped open by the parent using a finger that was extra, maybe?
What other authors wrote similar stuff? Any ideas?

So, at 4:30 am I remember more details. The protagonist was named Christy, an envoy. She was the first human invited past the starport to get to know the "goldens" better - part of a trade delegation.
The society was very "feudal" and not technologically advanced . . . albeit not without several surprises of their own . . .
And this brought me to:
Mary Gentle, author of Golden Witchbreed
It's now on-hold at the library . . .
I love google. *happy sigh*
