...please? Since going to university, most of my console gaming has stopped. I've gotten by on online games (KoL, Tactics Arena), but I would like to try something else.
My computer can play just about any game (albeit at a lower setting for some). The University's wireless blocks most gaming ports, so fully on-line games are out. I'd like some games that have a good combination of single player mode(s) and, optionally, some good online play. Any good mods/patches for those games would also be extremely useful.

It would help a lot if you'd say what types of games you like. As far as strategy goes, I really love Galactic Civilizations 2. The company that makes it, stardock, is just plain awesome. By far they have provided the best ongoing support I've ever seen from any company. If you are at all interested in turn based strategy, buy this game. They also have an expansion pack coming out in the spring, but if you preorder it you get immediate access to the beta.
I also really like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. The modding community is pretty good, and has already put out a ton of content.
The total war games are also good. I haven't bought the most recent one, but I really like Rome:Total War. If you do decide to get it, I would highly recommend the Rome: Total Realism mod, which adds a lot of content, and makes the game a lot better in my opinion.
All of these games can be bought from pretty much any store that sells pc games. However, if you decide to get Galciv 2, I'd recommend buying direct from the company, since they get a larger percentage of the money from online orders, and IMO it is usually best to support the developers as much as possible.
Also, these games are primarily single player. Rome:Total War has some multilayer, but the single player campaign is where the real meat of the game is at. The other two are single player only, for the most part. (there are some workarounds that can kind of get multiplayer-ish functionality, but they are unsupported and work poorly).

Are you looking for something more console-like, or something particular to the PC?
Company of Heroes, a RTS, has been getting reviews that suggest it's as ground-breaking in the Real Time Strategy genre as Half-Life was in First-Person-Shooters. This is hearsay, I'll warn; I haven't played it myself, but the critics have been more or less unanimous. Note the rather steep system requirements, however.
In the more action bent, I recently played and enjoyed both F.E.A.R. and Gun.
I'll second the recommendation of Oblivion, despite my earlier posting noting some of my frustrations with it. It's still a great experience, it's just not quite as free-form as the designers would like to think it is. If you haven't played it, I *highly* recommend the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. One of the best games of any genre, let alone RPGs.

Civilization 4 is wicked fun. I'm enjoying the latest Heroes of Might and Magic too, now that they've patched the bugs. Both games have strong single player, and some multi player capability.
I'm eager to try Neverwinter Nights 2, as I've heard good things about it, and the first one was awesome.
Warcraft III is pretty old, but still a solid RTS, and it will get you in the mood to play World of Warcraft, once you have an internet connection which allows online play.
Seriously, that game is total ASCII awesomeness. One of the most interesting and fun games of this year. When you add in the fact that it is free, you just can't go wrong. Don't let the simple "graphics" fool you. This game is really deep.
