You might want to get Ubuntu on a computer successfully before you go and try to put it on something it's not meant to go on.

I wasn't convinced until I saw movies in 1080p. The difference is staggering. It makes 1080i (HDTV) looks silly.

Hmm... that seems to conflict with what I've read about there being no real difference between 1080i and 1080p for movies: http://www.hometheatermag.com/gearworks/1106gear/

It seems more likely that the HDTV material you are comparing is from a lower quality source or the quality has been degrade through data compression.

My computer, to which I've hooked my TV, upconverts all my DVD media anyway. I can tell the difference, but only if I'm looking for it; it's certainly not something worth spending hundreds of dollars on.

I don't own a large enough tv to really care, though. I mean, I will reluctantly purchase an HDTV or whatever at some point this year just because my current tv/dvd combo weighs 75 lbs...but I don't want anything bigger than 26". So...is it really going to make any difference at all for me?

No. Below about 32", you won't be able to perceive any real difference in detail.

As pointless as blu-ray seems to me and most other people now, I do think it's well on its way to being the next standard.

Blu-ray is not going to be on my list for quite some time. We just got comfortable with DVDs, and still not sure who's really going to win the format war. While admittedly it looks nice, Planet Earth and Nova and Revenge of the Sith are dazzling on the TV we have. It's not a bad TV either. That was probably the understatement of the century; my father has gone electronics crazy. He is Best Buy's new favorite customer.

Anyway, even with the electronics-happy head-of-household that I may have, he's not going Blu-ray until they stop making DVDs. With the trade becoming still more unpredictable, the prices still outrageous, and the technology still in infancy, the point in Blu-ray has a couple years to mature into something worth a scrap of money.
