So I have felt, for quite some time, that I need to work with the youth. A few years ago I was sitting in a youth bible study when I had a feeling that I was supposed to be working with youth. A few weeks ago, while sitting in a new member orientation class, the youth minister was talking about the programs they offer and I again had the overwhelming feeling that I needed to work with the youth. I spoke to the youth minister today and sat in on the youth bible study tonight. What an amazing youth area. There were about 150 kids there and they have a wonderful area for the kids. Basketball hoops, ping pong, pool, air hockey, and foosball tables in the common area for before and after the bible study. The music was good (and loud), and the message was great.
I'm going to start sitting in on sunday school classes this sunday and will start teaching in a few weeks.
If you're one that believes in payer, please include me. I am very nervous.

I teach Sunday School classes to 16- and 17-year-old youth in my congregation. It's probably not quite the same as what you're taking on, but it's similar.
I was hoping you'd have some good pointers for engaging them better. I wasn't cut out to relate to people that age. I've been in this position for a year and I'm still not very comfortable.
Anyway, prayers sent your way. Good luck! If you feel like it's your calling, I'm sure you'll do fine.

I stopped going to SS (went to regular church instead) when I hit the "youth program" instead of the "childrens' ministry." See, the childrens' ministry had traditional Sunday School, while the youth program was more, I don't know, teen-oriented? I preferred the traditional classes; I didn't want to "hang out" and sing "praise songs" and talk about stuff with the youth minister without any kind of structure whatsoever while kids played air hockey. My mom, thankfully, was fine with me just going to regular chapel services with her (as long as I behaved!)

I taught youth Sunday school the entire summer - grades 7-12. It was a blast. They were responsive, they had good questions, and they were honest.
I loved it, I would do it again in an instant.

I am a youth sponsor and have been for the last three years. I currently work with the middle schoolers. They are so great because they can go from being totally ridiculous to asking the most profound questions in an instant.

brojack17, Hre is a website with some easy, cheap books to make. I am sure you will probably be given a curriculum(well, I am not sure, but our church has them), but these are fun to make and adaptable to anything. You can sign up for a monthly newsletter, but there are many of the basic books on the site:
