I don't really want anyone to SMC, for the record. I've just missed the gist of a couple of conversations recently (which may not even have been here on Hatrack) because of people using acronyms.

Now, I know why people use acronyms. It is a form of jargon that is intended to exclude outsiders to a certain degree. I just feel like registering my irritation at this moment.

Also, I've been told what IANAL stands for, but it's not really sticking.

It's also a more efficient method of communicating. For instance, in classes my profs often acronymize Markov Process (MP), Fictious Play (FP), Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), etc. The intent is not always to exclude, IMO FWIW but YMMV.

Whenever I see FTW, I always see the letters as representing the same words as those in WTF before I remember what it actually means.

And QFT bugs me, for some reason.

Does SMC have a meaning I'm not familiar with? Because this makes no sense to me coming from you.

It's a movie line. I've never heard it anywhere else and certainly never acronymized. But I imagine there might be 3 people on hatrack familiar enough with the movie to place the line and get the context. So I'm doing it to exclude people who throw other acronyms around, guessing they are unlikely to get this one.

Also, I don't know which particular 3 people. I'm just saying it would be a small number. I'm actually fairly embarassed about it and wish I'd thought about it a little longer before posting the thread.

Most online acronyms bug me, actually. I figure if you're going to spend so much time typing a whole post, why not spend another second or two and spell out everything?

Boy. Is my face ever red. No, I did not mean that, though thinking on it, maybe that was the original movie line.

Well, the one I didn't mean had a part of the body a woman lacks as "c".

The one I did mean was not really much better, but had the virtue of being said in a movie by Jack Nicholas.

P.S. I guess I won't delete this right away. I mean, I apologize profusely if I've caused anyone to think any impure thoughts (however absurd they may be.)

This thread begets ostentatious interpretation (of) intricate, deliberately-designed acronyms.
