So I watched the beginning of Snatch on TBS last night. I expected there to be a lot of dropped or altered dialogue to deal with all the profanity. But I never expected that they would change the source of Turkish's moniker from a plane crash to a TRAIN CRASH.

That's right. On TBS, Turkish's parents weren't in a plane crash together, and they didn't name their boy after the airline. They were in a train crash together, and they named him after the engine.

???

Did September Eleventh scar us all so deeply that we can't even handle the concept of a plane crash?

Or did TBS just recycle the airline version of the movie?

Oh dear god/dess!

I sure as hell hope not. That would really be pathetic.

Y'know a friend and I were talking about 9-11 the other day, and he said "we will not forget. the problem is, we need to forget and try to remember."

I don't think it scarred us so deeply that we can't handle the concept of a plane crash. I think it just made some of us overly afraid of being insensitive.

This reminds me of the Charade commentary, where they buy the ice cream cone and are discussing the possibility of being assasinated. It was 6 weeks from release and JFK was shot, so they dubbed it to be "eliminated".

The funny thing is somehow the DVD has "assasinated" again, and the director and screenwriter have no idea who did it or when. I think it was the screenwriter who felt his creative license was violated by the restoration. That was one reason I loved that commentary so much.

Still, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is not limited to Vietnam vets. It is becoming more pervasive in our society, as evidenced by all these baby boomers who think the war in Iraq is Vietnam all over again.

This reminds me of the old show, "The Greatest American Hero", which ran from 1981-1983. Sort of a silly show - teacher turned superhero storyline. Anyway, the main character's name was Ralph Hinkley. Then during the first season, John Hinkley shot Ronald Reagan, and suddenly the character's last name was changed to Hanley. They did a pretty poor job of dubbing the change in the episodes that had already been filmed. There was a big deal made about it at the time, as I recall. According to imdb, they changed the character's name back to Hinkley for the second season, after the story died down, but I didn't really watch the show, so I don't remember that.

I thought at the time it was a stupid thing to do.

Edit for stupid punctuation.
