Possibly....possibly.

So...basically the premise is BattleTrek Galactica? [Roll Eyes] [Big Grin]

My biggest problem with Trek (well, besides the silly hippie idealism) is the gender issues. I have hated every powerful woman they have ever had on screen. With the new one being the security officer, I'm thinking I'll get more of the same.

If she's not a totally unpleasant witch who speaks in a deep manly voice, I might give it a shot. But I'm not optimistic.

Given the kitschy art style, I wonder when they'll figure out that appealing to nostalgia is *not* the way to revive a dying franchise. If you want to hook a brand new generation of Trek fans, the way to do it is to return the franchise to the cutting edge of entertainment, not endlessly recreate the glory days of Kirk and Co.

While the art style is retro, the premise and plot seem to be quite a bit different from TOS and TNG era Trek.

I didn't like the art style either, but I'm not into cartoons so much.

However, the idea of tyring to repair a crumbled empire with serious damage to its transportation -- now that sounds cool. In DS9, there was a reference to a Federation colony that was "6 weeks away at maximum warp." Now there are chunks in which warp drive is impossible, so it'll be an even vaster empire, or rather, set of new governments forced into existence by the disaster. It sounds like a great idea to me.

I don't know about Avid, but I sure didn't. That whole series stunk.

I kinda like this idea. I hope it gets greenlighted.

Something that was said in the article struck me.

quote:
Chase is determined to bring the Federation (and a ship called Enterprise) back to the glory days of seeking out new life and new civilizations
This, imo, has been the problem with the last two treks. There hasn't been any of that glory days of seeking out new life and new civilizations. Trek turned into this big buearocracy of supporting itself and furthering its own mythos. With so much back story, so much technobabble, so much it had to live up to, they couldn't just go out and explore. Everything had to be explained, and fit into the explanations that came before that. If you screwed up and contradicted something that was explained before, you'd have half the trekkies after you for that. Trek is too heavy with itself. It needs SOMETHING to happen to clear all that out and get back to what it was originally when it was fresh and cutting edge. It needs stories that aren't dependant on technobabble and making sure it fits cannon. Trek has become its own worst enemy.

Think about successful sci fi shows now. BSG doesn't bother explaining anything. It just does stuff in space and ignores explanations and backstories and making sure it fits everything else that's come before it. Which leaves a whole lot more time for plain old good storytelling.

What trek needs is to get back to good storytelling and leave all that technobabble and backstory and cannon behind. Whether they have to reinvinsion the trek universe or wipe it all out and reclaim the past.

I keep telling them they need to do a series where they get rid of the Borg in the dimension where they took over everything.

Imagine it! 25,356,393 Enterprises popping into existence, kicking the living shit out of the Borg, and then leaving. [Wink]

Not really. The Klingon and the Borg annoyed me more, but I didn't think Janeway won any Woman of the Year awards. She talked like a man and she was always fighting with the crew about something. Why couldn't she ever sit back, say "Make it so," and just have things work for her? Everything always had to be a power struggle.

Mostly, Trek annoys me with the consistency of its lame women. There's always an excuse why the woman with a hint of power has to be unemotional or angry or generally unpleasant. Where's my female Picard? (Post-whiney Picard, of course.) Where' the Trek woman who can manage a position of power in harmony with her feminity? In short, where's my Trek Laura Roslin?
