That's from a month ago. Since then, they assassinated the new Hamas leader.

Beautiful.
Touching.
Peace.
Hope.

Now does it mean anything in the grand scale?

Not really....

Wow. 60 people support peace!

How many of those "intellectuals" are now condemning Israel for killing mass murderers?

Palestinian intellectuals, along with the vast majority of the Palestinian Diaspora, are comparatively moderate and realize that the suicide bombings are not helping the Palestinian cause.

The average Palestinian in the Occupied Territories sees things differently, for obvious reasons.

The sense I got from the articles was that these weren't people on the outside.

quote:

The intellectuals who signed yesterday's ad - including legislator Hanan Ashrawi and Abbas Zaki, a leading member of Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement - said such revenge attacks would lead to a strong Israeli retaliation and further hurt the Palestinian cause.

So, I can't help but hope that this may represent a sea change in how at leat some of the Palestinians are viewing using violence against Israel.

Hanan Ashrawi has always been moderate. She's married to a Jewish man. Actually, I'd love it if she was running the Palestinian Authority. Sadly, these people, while on the inside, don't have any power over the general populace, among which Hamas is fairly popular – partly for their humanitarian work and partly for their terrorism. Yes, I said humanitarian work.

I believe you. I know one of the reasons Bin Laden has a lot of support is because he has spent a lot of money on poor Muslims.

And don't you think it's significant that all these Palestinian leaders are at least trying to counter some of the opinions of those who are pushing for violent resolutions? It's one thing to want something silently, but to actively, publicly push for it is a pretty important step, wouldn't you say? Or am I just ignorant?

Hm. Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but I don't see it having a significant impact.

If it did, I would be overjoyed. [Smile]

The problem is that the most popular leaders are condemning Israel's killing of the two Hamas leaders. As long as the Palestinian people view Israel's defense of itself as wrong, peace is a long way off.

The problem is that the most popular figures aren't condemning Israel's incessant destruction of Palestinian infrastructure. As long as the Israeli people view Israel's assassinations as constructive, peace is a long way off.

Should I perhaps add a winking smiley to my post? It's intended to be sarcastic.

As in, I find the suggestion that one side has the moral high ground in this conflict to be patently absurd.
