I recently got an e-mail about a class trying to decide what the seven wonders of the world are now. The orignal list of the seven wonders was:
The Great Pyramid of Giza
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
The Colossus of Rhodes
The Lighthouse of Alexandria
the class came up with this as their updated list:
Egypt's Great Pyramids
Taj Mahal
Grand Canyon
Panama Canal
Empire State Building
St. Peter's Basilica
China's Great Wall
I found the topic interesting and wondered what other suggestions anyone might have for the list of wonders, or problems with any of the wonders mentioned.

Actually, I helped a friend research this a couple months back for a story she was writing. There are many lists of Seven Wonders. This site has one of the more complete lists of lists. They have maps and pictures, too.

I would disagree with the Grand Canyon, as it is not a man made structure. In it's place I would put the Herod's Temple. When it stood it would have been a truly magnificent edifice.

I was under the impression that there was an ORIGINAL 7 wonders of the world, sort of the ancient wonders, and the list that you posted above as a more modern replacement.
Most of the ancient wonders can be found in Sid Meiers Civilization III...

At this site you can vote for what you think the new 7 wonders should be...kind of like that school class did. It seems like this foundation will actually name them. I did it a long time ago and I think Machu Picchu and the Great Wall were among the 7. It's cool to see the pictures and lists.

So, to qualify as a Wonder, does something need to be artistically beautiful? Or architecturally impressive? If it's the latter, I'd suggest the Chunnel as a replacement for the Grand Canyon ...

I agree. It needs to be in the Seven Natural Wonders of the World list. they need one more manmade structure.
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient world were chosen by ancient people. Many of them have disappeared, or mostly disappeared. If you ever get to see the PBS special on the Seven Wonders, it is, um, wonderful.

I've always been more impressed with the Central American pyriamids than the ones in Egypt. Just a personal preference, though.

I'd have to agree with you Speed. Although you're right, it really is just preference, seeing as how both the Central American and Egyptian pyramids are so impressive.
Isn't the largest pyramid in the world somewhere in Central America? I remember seeing something about it on a Discovery program, except they hardly talked about it. It was at the very end...the thing hardly looked like a pyramid though, it looked more like a very big hill with forest covering it. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

CF - I think I saw the same special you're talking about! I don't remember the name of the pyramid - but I remember that it was largely unexcavated (which explains why they didn't talk much about it and why it looked like a hill) and I'm pretty sure it's in Guatemala. I want to say Tikal, but I'm not sure. And also I think it may depend on how you measure largest - largest by land area covered or largest by volume or what?

Two wonders that I would add to the list would be the Emperor Qin Shihuang's army of 6,000 terra cotta warriors, and The Internet.

Absolutely, the Internet should be there. I always felt it was at least, like the 8th Wonder...if not in the top 7.

Geoff, I know exactly what you're talking about. i might've seen the same special as you. you described it perfectly. i also don't remember any more information than what you gave. i just remember it looking like a big hill, with sort of a flatish top. it didn't come to a point or anything. I remember that it was gigantic.
