I'm having an odd Windows problem. Sometimes, when I turn on my computer, not all of my system tray icons show up. (No, I don't have it set to hide inactive icons.) It's always the same ones, too—Trillian, MusicMatch, and the volume control. They're all set to show up in the system tray, but they're randomly disappearing. O Wise Computer Gurus of Hatrack, help me!

could be a minor conflict between those programs and another program loading on startup. Try going to start, then run, typing msconfig, and hitting ok. Click on the startup tab, then look through the list there. Uncheck everything that you don't know what it is, then click apply, then ok (let it restart the computer). If something you want to run on startup doesn't, msconfig again and look through the list for what it might be.

Hmm. That helped a little, but not completely. Trillian didn't show up, so I wonder if it's just a problem with the program. When I start it manually, rather than letting it start automatically, there isn't any problem.

My response was mainly for Jon Boy, I'm not sure what your problem is. But doing what I suggested should speed your computer up a fair amount.

Could be a problem with the program. You might try going into trillian's settings and disabling it running on startup, then restarting twice, then going into the settings and reenabling it running on startup (I'm betting that setting is there somewhere).

Actually, before messing with msconfig, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, Double click on Administrative Tools, then on Event Viewer. Check out the application log.

I disagree, always mess with msconfig first. It's less confusing and may solve the problem right off. Plus it gets rid of cruft.
If one is computer savvy looking at the app logs to solve things may be fairly straightforward, but for others it's so much gibberish. Standard practice when having an app loading error with my tech support job is just to msconfig and get rid of everything starting up but system tray and scan registry. Gets rid of the problem nine times out of ten, at least.

Messing around with msconfig didn't seem to fix Trillian's problem. It starts up just fine when I start Windows, but the tray icon doesn't appear. And since it doesn't appear on the taskbar and you can't alt+tab to it, I have to start it up again once it's minimized.

Hear, hear, Scott R. Startup programs are one of the biggest trouble causers for windows, besides being annoying.
