I'm going to be showing up, Caleb and Kayla. Is that ok?
Look for me in the jello. If no jello, look for me in the cranberry sauce. If no cranberry sauce or no jello, I just flat out refuse to show up.

Sorry I'm so late in responding. I was in DC all day. I'm definitely going to make it.
I will be there to give rides to and from airport if needed. I may leave on Saturday though (no specific timetable, I'm just figuring that Caleb will discover what so many have before, that a large dose of me all at once can be damaging!

Well...when are you arriving? We could probably get you to Kayla's if you are there in time for Thanksgiving, if you really wanted to cook, that is...
Now, we WILL of course need to eat OTHER meals so you can also cook those.
I'm good at washing dishes.
I make a mean wine reduction sauce.
I now know how to make garlic smashed potatoes too.
Now, all we need is for Caleb to get here and tell us if he is dying to do it at his house, or if y'all will come here.

two whole "heads" of garlic (or one really large one). 4 lbs white potatoes 1 small container of heavy cream 1/4 lb sweet unsalted butter, sliced to aid in mixing. olive oil salt (I use course sea salt, then grind it with the pepper) fresh ground black pepper (I use whole pepper corns and grind them with the salt) white pepper and additional salt (to taste)
Prep the garlic: -preheat oven to 400 degrees. - cut two squares of aluminum foil - Cut garlic heads in half at the "equator" (not pole to pole) - drizzle with olive oil - sprinkle with salt & pepper - wrap in aluminum foil, seal it well
Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes.
Meanwhile...
Peel the potatoes and cut into cubes (about 1/2" on a side, but don't get too worked up about shape or size)
Place cut potatoes into a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a bit of salt and bring to a boil.
Boil for about 20 minutes or until pieces are "fork tender" (whatever the hell that means.
YOu should time this so that the garlic is ready before you are ready to smush the potatoes...
Dump the water and return the potatoes to the pot. Over a very low heat (or no added heat at all if the pan is still hot enough).
Add the cream and butter and mix with a large wooden spoon, spatula or wisk. You aren't trying to "MASH" the potatoes, but you'll get a mix that is partly mashed and partly still in cubes.
Take the garlic and squeeze the cooked cloves into the potatoes. Add as much as you like. Try not to get the garlic "paper" into the mix, but if you do, just rename the dish "rustico" and leave it in there.
Serve as soon as the garlic is mixed in.
So again, you sort of have to time this one to be ready just when you are setting out the main course.
Eat, enjoy!
I ended up adding a bit of extra salt and pepper to the mix once I was done with it. You may not want to... White pepper is good to add to this one if you are seasoning at the final stage.
I read Caleb's e-mail as saying we were definitely coming to your place. Is that right?
(It's cool with me that y'all come here. I just wanted to know if I needed to go shopping tomorrow night. If I don't here from Caleb by then, I'll expect y'all to show up and eat the food I've gotten.)

Mack, if you can come please do. I'm leaving the office @ noon tomorrow, so I can definitely pick you up at the airport if I need to.
I believe we've settled the dinner issue; we're having it at Kayla's on Thursday night. Wednesday Bob's getting into town and if Mack comes too I suppose we could all run to Kayla's if she needs help cooking (or if Bob & Mack can't stand not being able to help--I'll just assume my usual supervisory role in such matters <grin>).
And then Thursday after dinner we'll all go down to the plaza and watch the lighting ceremony.
And the rest of the time is time.

What time do y'all eat dinner? I've noticed that here in farmland, dinner is apparently at noon, however, where I come from dinner is at 6 or 7. And Thanksgiving dinner is usually around 2.
So, what time are y'all showing up?

quote: Kansas City’s most cherished holiday tradition officially begins the Yuletide season. The entire Country Club Plaza will be illuminated with more than 200,000 jewel-colored lights through Jan. 18, 2003. Free admission. 7-8 p.m. (Lights come on at 7:30 p.m.)
So, y'all will want to leave here by 6 or 6:30, probably.
Dinner will be between 2 and 3 then. Time to goof around before hand, or after.
Hey, Caleb, bring some tupperware for leftovers.
Anyone have a decent carving knife? If not, mine will work, but the white meat will look. . . interesting.

Hi Boon! I'm just not sure exactly when I'll be going through your town on the way up. Not sure on the way back down either. So I didn't want to tell you yes and then not show up, or have it be some inconvenient time, ya know.

Sure...I'll e-mail you my number, and you can call me when you're on your way, or when you decide you can't make it, or whatever. I'm flexible! See? That was hard.
Edit: If you can come by on the trip up, I'll bake a pie for you to take with you. You just have to promise to lie to me if you hate it!

Bob, yes I did e-mail you (twice now!) Though, I have one question that could use an answer before 6.
Though I've never personally witnessed it, I've heard rumors that there are people out there who actually have enough room after dinner for pie. If these rumors are true, what kind do you think? Pumpkin? Sweet potato? Pecan? I'm thinking about doing 2 pies. (I know that if we eat at 2 there might be enough time to let the food settle a bit and have pie at 5, plus, you really need leftovers. )

Man, we used to have those while visiting my grandparents in Florida. I never did get the difference between those and Lemon meringue. But, they are good, so. . . But I told Bob I had no idea what they drink and I only have water, diet dr. pepper and tea. So, he and Caleb are supposed to bring something to drink. (He keeps insisting on bringing something. I thought about Jello, but it took me 35 years to figure out how to make it. Seriously. )
Oh, and Bob, what is your position on cranberry sauce? Green bean casserole? Candied yams? Do you have any favorite Thanksgiving dishes that I could include on the menu? (Besides turkey, stuffing, gravy, and mashed potatoes.) Oh, and I'm going to force feed you some of that cheese ball before dinner, just so you know.

The biggest difference I know is...I don't meringue it. I can send cool whip, rediwhip, or whipping cream. It's best with real (freshly) whipped cream, but that doesn't keep very long once it's been whipped. If one of you is going to whip it up, I'll send a pint. Make sense?

Like heavy whipping cream? I have some of that in the fridge. Do you ever add anything to it to make it sweeter or, is the pie so sweet it doesn't need it? Also, I have 4 things of cool whip in the freezer. Plus, if Bob isn't going that way, it's no big deal. K Bob?

Yep, that's exactly what I mean. And yes, you'd need to add sugar. The pie is very, very sweet and tart and rich, and well worth an hour even if lunch weren't offered. But you're right, if Bob can't make it, what, Wednesday?, it's really not that big a deal...I'm making 5 of them anyway. Everybody around here wants them.

Did Bob disappear? Tabithecat, if you have any imput, that would be cool, too. Or Caleb. Or, when mack gets back and if she's coming, her opinion would be helpful.
Boon, how much of what do you add?

I just got into this, sorry. no computer at home right now so I have to seek it at work. my only input and it's never easy for the chef but I'm allergic to onions but other than that (ya as if that's a small thing) I was going to bring a Tippins pumpkin cream pie, but it appears that the pie situation is covered. if there is anything that I can do please let me know. Mac I'm glad that you have decided to come. that's all I have for now.
