I am currently recovering from a bad crash. I broke my helmet and suffered a concussion, sprained my back and neck, etc. So I decided this was a good time to upload my photos from Whistler to Foobonic. Enjoy.

Actually, I got hurt twice over the summer. Once on skis, and on a bike the day after I got my cast off.

Wow, I always love your pictures. That one with the star trails and the single tree trunk was my wallpaper for a long time. But man, I hate it that you got hurt again! Hope you recover completely. Do take better care of yourself. We need more of those pictures.
I'm going to try to get one of those Canon ES 10Ds (is that it? I have it linked on my home computer anyway) that you infected me with geek lust for, before I go over to Iraq. Look for some nice shots of desert stars from me from there. I'll have to get my own user album on foo or something.

Unless you want to take actions shots, or have a magnesium fetish, go with the EOS Digital Rebel instead. It's several hundred cheaper, and only differs in that it takes 2 shots /sec as opposed to 3 and it has a plastic body rather than the aforementioned magnesium.

Okay, thanks, I will do that. Do you think the magnesium body would be a lot tougher for rugged locations, though? That would be my only reservation.

Having seen the stuff burn (it isn't that hard to catch on fire, though more difficult than say metal sodium) I don't know if I'd want anything with a magnesium shell unless it is definitively alloyed with a non-flammable non rusting metal.

Don't worry, it's safely alloyed and won't burst into flames in your hands. I don't even think it would be legal to sell consumer electronics made out of pure magnesium. And yes, aka, I think it is slightly more rugged. However, it is heavier.

Actually, ligting solid magnesium metal isn't that easy; matches or a bic probably wouldn't cut it. I find that a propane plumbers torch works well.

Yes it is much easier to light in powder or flake form but it is also a pretty soft metal and if it wasn't alloyed could easily chip off a small peice that was igniteable.

I've used that kind of flint before, and yes, that magnesium burns well when scraped into flakes. However, trying to light a piece of solid magnesium with matches can be frustrating.

I guess I used a bunsen burner in the lab actually <grin> I still wouldn't want to carry around something that would flame up like that even with bunsen burner heat!
The fact that it is alloyed makes me relieved that aka is not going to become a giant human molotov cocktail if she's wandering through Iraq somewhere.
You would be surprised what alloys idiots try to use on occasion. I know, I'm the one who gets to check them!

Get the 1D Mark II. It's probably the best "mid-range" digital SLR out there. Heck, its probably better than most of the really expensive ones.

Chaeron: its very mid range. Check out the Canon EOS 1D-S for an lower high-end range camera, along with the Contax N digital and Kodak DCS560. Then take a look at the Kodak DCS660 and DCS460. There are a few others that round out the high price range, but I forget their names now.
And lets not even go into the price of the camere one can assemble using a Hasselblad digital camera body and, say, one of Canon's DCS Pro backs, or maybe one by S3.
Its very much mid-range .

Fugu: are you a professional photographer, or do you just have more money than god?
On a related note, I actually went skiing again on sunday. My back is still sore, so I was skiing fairly timidly and was off balance a fair bit, however, the skiing was great. There was plenty of fresh tracks to be had; I was skiing thigh deep powder all day. On top of it all, it was sunny too. In other words, my recovery is comming along nicely.

money! I have no money. In some ways of looking at it, I have negative money. Or rather, negative net worth.
No, I could not afford to buy even a low end DSLR like Digital Rebel. But I so wish I could afford one . . . or a digital hasselblad . . . medium format is so much fun!
