This is not intended to compete with the other hug thread. Nor do I expect this thread to match the other one in activity, or to live on the first page. It's cool that that thread exist, as a place people can come and say, I've had a rotten day, gimme some unconditional love. This thread is not intended to impugn the big hug thread.
But I've also thought it would be cool if there were a thread for unrequested hugs. In fact, I think something like this might just be what Nate had in mind when he created the original hug thread. I think it would be cool because hugs here would be more random.
Can't that happen in the other thread? Sure, but I think there are people who don't go to that other thread, because there are a dozen or so people who post there on a continual basis, who automatically hug each other in each post. And, once again, I'm certainly not criticizing that. But it can get intimidating to an outsider. And you know that the intended recipient is not going to see your post unless he or she is a regular, because it will quickly be lost in that fast-moving thread among much larger posts.
So here's another hug thread. ::watches the anti-hug people cringe:: I don't expect it to live on page one like the other one does, but feel free to rescue it anytime you see a need.
With that in mind, I propose a few ground rules. Ground rules?! Who the heck am I to be proposing rules in a thread?! I have no power here--apart from the ultimate thread power. But these suggestions are simply intended to diffferentiate this thread from the big hug thread, and so if you don't want to follow them, there's already another thread for that.
Think of these as suggestions to keep this thread from developing its own culture, or from being a popularity thread, or from being intimidating to anybody:
No requesting hugs in here.
Only one hug per post.
No seconding of hugs in here. If I hug someone, they don't need to be hugged again. To put an arbitrary limit on this, let's say no repeat hugs on the same page--assuming, of course, that this thread ever lives to be more than one page long.
No hugging back the person who hugged you.
No hugging of me--at least, not on the first page.
If you wish to explain why you are hugging somebody--maybe they are having a hard time, or have done something especially nice for you, or have accomplished some big life landmark, or you just want to express your friendship or admiration--then feel free. If you don't feel like it, don't. I think there's comething neat about the potential randomness of it all. So I will begin by hugging somebody who sometimes gets unfairly dogpiled, because she's not afraid to stand up for her beliefs, whether they are popular or not: (((Kat))) I admire the strength of your convictions.
What do you think--is there room for this thread at Hatrack?

Nature's first green is gold The hardest hue to hold Her early leaf's a flower But only so an hour As leaf subsides to leaf So Eden sank to grief So dawn goes down to day Nothing gold can stay.
