Does anyone else think it was a mistake to set the game during the journey of the Ring? This is what doomed Star Wars Galaxy in my opinion. By placing such a heavy, well-known story that cannot really be affected by the players, they've compromised what makes MMORPGs fun.

SWG would have been much more fun had it been set in the Old Republic, where even the known story-lines are dwarfed by the size of the galaxy. Plus, anyone who wanted to could have been a Jedi Knight. [Smile]

Middle Earth would probably be better set right after Isildur, et al. first took the Ring from Sauron or right after the destruction of the Ring by Frodo/Gollum. That way players could make a difference in the world without having to carry the weight of the story.

Nah. I don't mind that. They did specify
quote:
Will MEO feature a storyline for players to experience?
Yes. The team has created an exciting new storyline for MEO that allows players to experience a unique adventure set in Middle-earth.

But that'll give people the chance to experience what they all know about, and all sorts of things went on during the War of the Ring, not just the journey. They could make a Simarillion expansion if they wanted to.

RoTK only focused on a small portion of middle earth. As Gandalf explained at the end of the book, many battles were fought in Gimli and Legolas' homelands up north. Treebeard also talked about an onslaught of Orcs tried to invade Galadriel's realm.

There is also Sarumon's attack of the Shire, the troop deployment of the Easterlings, the struggles of Gondor's other territories, etc. There is plenty to keep us busy me thinks.

I especially want to know what Radagast and the eagles were doing during the war of the ring. They must have been delayed by something, or else they could have made the journey of the ring bearer much shorter.

But if the journey were shorter, neither Frodo nor Sam would have developed as needed to fulfill the mission.

But Frodo didn't develop the character necessary to fulfill the mission. It was Gollum's attack that destroyed the ring, not Frodo.

(Of course, one could argue that Gollum fell because he had betrayed the promise he made on "the precious." But that's debatable IMHO.)

But Frodo didn't kill Gollum precisely because his journey up to that point helped him realize the truth in Gandalf's words about pity staying Bilbo's hand.

OK, Frodo's character development allowed Gollum to be at the right place at the right time, but Gollum could have just as easily walked away with the ring without falling into the cracks of doom. I guess I just don't like assigning credit to accidents. But then again, Gandalf implied Bilbo was meant to find the ring, so maybe it is all part of a grand design.

::picks up thread, placing back on track::

I'd love to play around in this game once the beta opens up. I like the idea of starting with a certain character class, and getting put into a subset of it based on how you play. I like the fact that skills improve with use (as in Morrowind). I LOVE the idea of having some epic weapons that improve with battles. Sounds cool. I do worry about the same thing mentioned above - having it set during the events in the books, but not actually being able to affect that part of the story. Should be enough to keep us busy otherwise, though. Hopefully.
