There were a lot of murmurings about it going up when the students found out. But so far, the response has been fairly positive. People comment about how they smile when they see it. The photograph will remain on the Library for about three months. The press release from Brown is here.
quote:Born in Milan in 1971, Paola Pivi studied nuclear engineering before turning to art and attending the Academia di Breara. Her work has been shown widely throughout Europe and Asia, and “Donkey” was included in the 2003 Venice Biennale. (It was brought to Brown immediately upon the close of the Biennale.) Pivi was also included in the 2001 Venice Biennale and was awarded the Prize d’Oro. “Donkey” is one of a series of whimsical images by the artist in which animals show up in unexpected places – such as zebras on a snowy mountainside and ostriches in the ocean.
BTW, I took that photo from my bedroom window. The SciLi is roughly 14 (17 if you count differently) stories tall. My program house, Techhouse, put a Tetris game on the south facing side in 2000. The Pivi photograph is on the west facing side.

I think the painting is very cool. Whimsical is the word that comes to mind, and in my opinion there is way, way too little whimsy in the world. Things like this help lighten the mood a little.
