On my way to work today I was listening to the Vegas channel with Handel (spelling) commentating on the news. He annoys me, however at this hour it is one of the few shows on, and I like hearing the news.

He starts talking about how Libya is going to execute 7 Bulgarian medics because they intentionally gave children aids. He was so worked up that his emotion was a little infectious. Paraphrase, "They should kill them by firing squad. In America they would get life in prison, thank goodness over there they can kill them. Anyone who would intentionally give kids aids should be executed!"

I started to get mad at the Bulgarians. I assumed they did give kids aids intentionally because they were sick *explicitive*s. As a supporter of capital punishment (in theory) when someone kills kids, I was getting a little worked up--angry against the sick doctors.

I decided to research the case at work. It wasn't long until I found this article.
quote:
The case was dismissed last year for lack of evidence, but the prosecution refiled charges...

A BBC correspondent says diplomats have suggested the case could be an attempt to divert attention from the conditions in Libya's state-run hospitals...

On the first day of the hearing, Professor Luc Montagnier presented a report he had made on the case, showing the infection had already begun before those accused started working at the hospital, and continued to spread after they were arrested...

"This can happen not only in this hospital, but in many others, particularly paediatric hospitals, because children are more vulnerable to infection, even by very small quantities of blood," he told Bulgarian radio after testifying in court...

When you hear someone else’s opinion on the news, you assume they news they are reporting is researched and true. I found this is often not the case. Because so much of news is actually commentary, I think it is scary how much power talk radio is getting.

Geee, you mean you can't believe everything the media says?! [Wink]

Having lived in Bulgaria and knowing Bulgarian doctors, I would have been highly suspicious of such a story to begin with.

Suspicious how? You think they would of or wouldn't have spread Aids? What kind of experience did you have with Bulgarian doctors?

All the Bulgarian doctors and nurses I knew were very kindhearted people who worked very hard to do their best with the resources and knowledge available to them (which both lagged behind the American standard).
