It's refreshing that Lucas has at least made one good decision while making the prequels. Of course, it's an old idea - he's had that whole 3rd movie/Revenge of the X thing sitting around on his back burner for quite a long time.
Maybe he's been saving all the good stuff up for last.
Was the first one always called "A New Hope", or did they name it retroactively when they started making new ones?

They changed it after the first few months or the first year, I believe. After it was apparent that Lucas had a hit on his hands, the title was changed to reflect it being the first of a series in 1979.

It wasn't editing - the title was merely changed because of what was just said above - Revenge wasn't a Jedi trait. Plus, Return had a few double meanings in all that capped off the story well ((Return of the Jedi (singular) = Luke, Return of the Jedi (plural) = Jedi and the Light Side of the Force in General)).
I'm quite looking forward to Revenge of the Sith.

The first movie alwasy had "Episode IV: A New Hope" in the opening sequence.
I don't believe it was ever used as the title until the special editions came out in the theaters, although it might have been on the cover of the VHS versions before that.

As some one who saw the original movie at the movie theater when it first came out, something many of our younger members can not say as they were not born when the movie was first released, I do not remember their being a sub-title in the movie. Lucas may have always had the idea but it was not on the original print, IIRC.

Try saying "The Revenge of the Sith" fast and over and over again. It's quite a tongue twister, especially when you're not thinking about it.

Not exactly. The 1977 theatrical release didn't have the EPISODE IV header. It wasn't until the 1979 theatrical Re-Release (when it was known for a fact that the sequels could be made) that the title was added.

Which Sith is going to have his revenge? I don't remember in the second movie anything happening to a sith that he needs revenge for. But I think this movie is going to be really good, considering all the things that's going to have to happen in it, including Anakin turning into Darth Vader, the Empire being established, Luke and Leia being born, I think it'll be a fun movie to watch.

I didn't think Episode 2 was all that bad. Phantom Menace stunk out loud, but Considering the time between the first 3 movies and the last two, it's better to think about them as two seperate franchises. There was just not the same magic. . .

It's not so much that the two trilogies are separate franchises. It's that Lucas wrote Return of the Jedi, Phantom Menace, and Attack of the Clones. He's an awful writer, he should leave the dialogue to others...

Oh, don't get me started on Ep II! The love story--what a joke! Older, wiser, more mature Princess Amidala falls for younger, foolish, immature, *angsty* Aniken? Why? Because he's cute? Oh puh-leeez. "I truly, deeply, love you." How did Natalie keep a straight face when she said it? Now *that* was acting.
Sure, we all thought Yoda fighting with a lightsaber was a cool idea when it first occurred to us, but then we came to our senses. He moved like a mosquito on crack, as I believe someone once phrased it. It didn't do any more for the image of the "wise, powerful yoda" than midichlorians did for "The Force".
And when the movie came out on DVD, the big selling line was "See Yoda Da Man!" As though that was the only thing the movie had going for it and they knew it! That was the moment I knew that Star Wars couldn't sink any lower.
Though you are correct, I will *have* to watch this movie at some point, if only out of curiosity. And hey, I can always throw marshmallows at it. (We like to rent uber-awful movies and pelt the screen w/ marshmallows whenever the movie hath offended us.)
I used to side with the reasoning that Lucas was abducted by aliens and replaced with a doppleganger of some sort. But now I think I have come to the realization that the first three were only good by some miracle, some higher grace. I come to this conclusion after watching movies like "Howard the Duck". (And have you *seen* the Ewok movies?!) If you haven't seen it then you need to watch it so you can realize that that Lucas is not capable of making good movies. Maybe the original 3 Star Wars were a result of a Lucas doppleganger. Oh, but if you do watch it, make sure you have your marshmallows ready....
Edit: Who here saw that contest of Star Wars fan-fic movies? Lucas was the judge, got to pick which one he thought was best. He passed over multitudes of brilliant options, most of which at least slightly poked fun at the movies, and chose the incredibly poorly made and cheesy.... I am trying to remember the title, it was something like "Playing with Tontons". Some silly song about a girl who likes to play with her Star Wars (tm) merchandise toys.
The man is brilliant with special effects and whatnot, but keep him as far away from the writing and story-line as possible! He ruins whatever he touches.

This was a ploy put out by lucas. They "accidentally" let 'Revenge of the Jedi' leak out to fool people who made boot-leg merchandise.

I hate that movie. It is frankenmovie. The entirety of the background sets for Ep2 was digital. The movie had no life.

if you watch EP II on DVD and just press NEXT on your handy dandy dvd remote everytime a love scence comes on, its actually a very very good movie.

I love Willow. The above exchange absolutely kills me, and I've used it on occasion. It's the perfect archetypal hero story - we watched it in English Lit as an example of such.
