Ok, I'm bulding a Franenstein here out of parts and pieces. (Thanks Screeling!!!). I scavenged a HD out of a comp I found in our dumpster. Put it in Frankie and I keep getting SESSION5_INITIALIZATION_FAILED X0.0000000...71 with my Win2K cd. (archival copy, I lost my original during one of my many moves).
Put the same HD in the old HP here, same Win2k disk and it formats and installs without a hitch.

Trying my XP Home disk now. The XP disk it is saying:

Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged.

Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated. Consult your computer manual or SCSI adapter documentation for more information.

You must select a different partition for Windows XP.
To continue, press ENTER

The HD might have been damaged - will it boot without a system disk at all?

Not anymore. I've formatted it a couple times now. It DID before the format (had Win95 on it and was passworded)
Just don't make sense that Win2K installs when its plugged into one computer yet not the other one.

I'm going to guess here, but you may need to re-partition the drive.

If the HD was running Windows 95, I don't think it's capable of supporting Win2k or XP, which makes this a lost cause.

Formatting the hard drive will not solve any partition problems of the HD.
