Ok, so we have the worst lyrics ever. Lets get more positive. Post your favorite song lyrics here. Some of my personal favs:
The Kids Aren't Alight, The Offspring
quote:When we were young the future was so bright The old neighborhood was so alive And every kid on the whole damn street Was gonna make it big in every beat
Now the neighborhood's cracked and torn The kids are grown up but their lives are worn How can one little street Swallow so many lives
Chances thrown Nothing's free Longing for Used to be Still it's hard Hard to see Fragile lives shattered dreams
Jenny had a chance, well she really did Instead she dropped out and had a couple of kids Mark still lives at home cause he's got no job He just plays guitar and smokes a lot of pot
Jay committed suicide Brandon OD'd and died What the hell is going on? The cruellest dream - reality
Chances thrown Nothing's free Longing for what used to be Still it's hard Hard to see Fragile lives Shattered dreams
Americana, The Offspring
quote: Well I'd like to tell you all about my dream, it's a place Where strip malls abound and diversion's meer moments away
Where culture's defined by the Ones least refined And you'll be left behind If you don't fit in It's all distorted In americana my way
Well **** you
Well my dream has come true My vision has come true
Now give me my cable, fast food, four-by's, tats right away I want it right now cause my generation don't like to wait
My future's determined by Thieves, thugs, and vermin It's quite an excursion But it's okay Everything's backwards In americana my way
Well **** you
Well my dream has come true My vision has come true
I'm a product Of my environment So don't blame me, I just work here But I wanna **** it up
My rights are denied by Those least qualified Trading profit for pride But it's okay Everything's backwards In americana my way
Well **** you
My nightmare has come true My nightmare has come true Yeah, it's all coming true
I love the Offspring, they write some great lyrics. But on a happier note, another one of my favs: Good Riddance(Time of Your Life), Green Day
quote: Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road. Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go. So make the best of this test, and don't ask why. It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life.
So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind. Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time. Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial. For what it's worth, it was worth all the while. It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life.
And now I'd better stop and let someone else post some lyrics, before I post my entire song library (which would take a while as it takes up around 7 gigabytes of computer memory).

There are many lyrics that I love, but here are a few. I love the whole songs, but they're a bit long to post, heh.
quote: There's no sensation to compare with this Suspended animation, a state of bliss Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit, I
--Pink Floyd, Learning to Fly.
quote:I saw a star beneath the stairs, glowing through the melting wall Who will be the first, to begin their fall Or will we become one?
Am I the star beneath the stairs? Am I the ghost upon the stage? Am I your anything?
-- AFI, Morningstar.
quote:I cannot leave here, I cannot stay Forever haunted, more than afraid Asphyxiate on words I would say I'm drawn to a blackened sky as I turn blue
There are no flowers, no, not this time There'll be no angels gracing the lines, just these stark words I find I'd show a smile, but I'm too weak I'd share with you, could I only speak, just how much this hurts me
-- AFI, This Time Imperfect.
quote:Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain. You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today. And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older, Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
-- Pink Floyd, Time.
quote: I never made promises lightly And there have been some that I've broken But I swear in the days still left We'll walk in the fields of gold
-- Sting, Fields of Gold. Posts: 1431 | Registered: Aug 2003

#41 by Dave Matthews Band Come and see I swear by now I'm playing time I against my troubles I'm coming slow but speeding Do you wish a dance and while I'm in the front the play on time is won but the difficulty is coming here
I will go in this way And find my own way out I wont tell you to stay But I'm coming to much more Me All at once the ghosts come back Reeling in you now What if they came down crushing Remember when I used to play for all of the loneliness that nobody notice now I'm begging slow I'm coming here Only waiting I wanted to stay I wanted to play I wanted to love you
I'm only this far And only tomorrow leads my way
I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head Please, I wouldn't pass this by I would take any more than What sort of man goes by I will bring water Why wont you ever be glad It melts into wonder I came in praying for you why wont you run in the rain and play let the tears splash all over you
Angel, angel Don’t take your life tonight I know they take And that they take in turn And they give you nothing real For yourself in return
But when they’ve used you And they’ve broken you And they’ve wasted all your money And cast your shell aside
And when they’ve bought you And they’ve sold you And they’ve billed you for the pleasure And they’ve made your parents cry I will be here Oh, believe me I will be here ...believe me
Angel, don’t take your life Some people have got no pride They do not understand The urgency of life But I love you more than life I love you more than life I love you more than life I love you more than life

quote:i'm not a perfect person. there are many things i wish i didnt do but i continue learning. i never meant to do those things to you. and so i have to say before i go, that i just want you to know
i've found a reason for me, to change who i used to be a reason to start over new, and the reason is you
i'm sorry that i hurt you, it's something i must live with everyday and all the pain i put you through, i wish that i could take it all away and be the one who catches all your tears, thats why i need you to hear
Yeah, it's the only song of theirs that I know, but I love it anyway.

"Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails (as well as Johnny Cash's cover). But I'm sure most here have read those lyrics by now, as they've been posted on almost every one of these topics.
The lyrics to "Alcohol" and "Who Needs Sleep?" by Barenaked Ladies are awesome.
While by no means the most thought-provoking lyrics, "Work Song" by Caroline's Spine has some really good'ns. I'd post the lyrics to this, but I can't pick out a select few, and posting the whole song would probably be a bad idea.
"Through Her Eyes" by Dream Theater is a good one, in my opinion.
quote:She never really had a chance On that fateful moonlit night Sacrificed without a fight A victim of her circumstance
Now that I’ve become aware And I’ve exposed this tragedy A sadness grows inside of me It all seems so unfair
(Chorus:) I’m learning all about my life By looking through her eyes
Just beyond the churchyard gates Where the grass is overgrown I saw the writing on her stone I felt like I would suffocate
In loving memory of our child So innocent, eyes open wide I felt so empty as I cried Like part of me had died
quote:And I know what it’s like To lose someone you love And this felt just the same
She wasn’t given any choice Desperation stole her voice I’ve been given so much more in life I’ve got a son, I’ve got a wife
I've always had a thing for The Eagles, too. "Wasted Time" is one of my favorites.
I don't care how many times you've argued this or how repulsive a person he is, but Eminem's "Lose Yourself" has some of the greatest lyrics ever.
"Friend of Mine" by Eve 6 is good, too, if a little cliche.
"Learning How To Smile" and "Wonderful" by Everclear kick tush.
"What It's Like" by Everlast has great lyrics, even to people who disagree with some of the positions it implies.
"Hey Julie" by Fountains of Wayne is my favorite feel-good love song I've heard in the past two or three years.
quote:Workin' all day for a mean little man With a clip-on tie and a rub-on tan He's got me runnin' 'round the office like a dog around the track But when I get back home you're always there to rub my back
Chorus: Hey Julie, look what they're doing to me Tryin' to trip me up, tryin' to wear me down Julie, I swear it's so hard to bear it And I'd never make it through without you around No, I'd never make it through without you around
Hours on the phone makin' pointless calls I got a desk full of paper that means nothin' at all Sometimes I catch myself staring into space Counting down the hours 'til I get to see your face
"Patience" by Guns N' Roses has some great lyrics as well.
"Adrian" by Jewel is a heart-wrencher.
"Duluth" and "Godless" by Mason Jennings rock, too.
"The View" by Modest Mouse doesn't have the greatest lyrics altogether, but the chorus is AWESOME.
quote:As life gets longer, awful feels softer, and it feels pretty soft to me. And if it takes sh*t to make bliss, well I feel pretty blissfully.
If life's not beautiful without the pain, well I'd just rather never ever even see beauty again. Well as life gets longer, awful feels softer. And it feels pretty soft to me
"The Odyssey" by Symphony X also has GREAT lyrics and music, but I'm sure I've plugged that song enough.
"Narcolepsy" by Third Eye Blind is one of my favorite songs, ever.
"Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire is great.
"Bob" and "Amish Paradise" by Weird Al are good, too.
"When The Children Cry" by White Lion is cool...
Anyway, that's all I've got for now.

Mary Jo, sitting alone Drinking tea, she just got home She wants, I don’t know what you want
Mary Jo, living alone Drinking gin with the telly on She wants
The night to follow day and back again She doesn’t want to sleep Well who could blame her if she wants The night to follow day and back again She doesn’t want to sleep Well who could blame her if she sleeps? Well who could blame her if she sleeps? Well who could blame her if she’s sleeping?
Mary Jo, back with yourself For company, keep telling yourself you’re young It’ll happen soon
Mary Jo, no one can see What you’ve been through Now you’ve got love to burn
It’s someone else’s turn to go through hell Now you can see them come from twenty yards Yeah you can tell It’s someone else’s turn to take a fall And now you are the one who’s strong enough to help them The one who’s strong enough to help them The one who’s strong enough to help them all
Mary Jo, you’re looking thin You’re reading a book, The State I'm in But oh, it doesn’t help at all What you want is a cigarette And a thespian with a caravanette in Hull
Because life is never dull in your dreams A pity that it never seems to work the way you see it Life is never dull in your dreams A sorry tale of action and the men you left for Women, and the men you left for Intrigue, and the men you left for dead.

Friendly reminder in bold letters: Do not quote entire songs on this site. It could get our hosts into copyright trouble.
And here's a favorite lyric of mine; the song is U2, the lyrics by Salman Rushdie:
quote:All my life, i worshipped her Her golden voice, her beauty's beat How she made us feel How she made me real And the ground beneath her feet And the ground beneath her feet
And now i can't be sure of anything Black is white, and cold is heat For what i worshipped stole my love away It was the ground beneath her feet It was the ground beneath her feet
So beautifully melancholy!

There are a great many lyrics sites out there, none of which, as far as I am aware, have gotten into any trouble. It's an infringement on the level of writing fanfic, i.e. no one ever really gets busted for it.

Did it really take 10 years for Offspring and Greenday to make it from California to Indiana?
The one I lump in with those two is Blind Melon, even though their style is different because it, along with the other two is what they played at the swimming pool where I worked when I was in my early teens.

I was wondering if this was some sort of High School flashback with all the Offspring and such myself.

Who cares about the age, its good music. And I wasn't really into that stuff when it was popular (seeing as 10 years ago I was 8 ). Its good music, who cares how old it is?

Jaime I'm not really a punkrocker, try geek I actually like a huge variety of music, those just happen to be a few of my favorite rocks songs. I listen to punk, alternative, metal, ska, pop, classical, soundtracks, celtic, techno... the list goes on. Just about anything save country (though, I don't like much hip-hop or rap).

I like the Americana CD too, but more for the music than the lyrics. Actually, I think "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" probably has the best lyrics on the whole album. The two you posted have a lot of needless lines, in my opinion.

"Last Night" or "Spanish Train" by Chris de Burgh resurrect (at least as of twenty years ago) the ballad.
"Last Night"
Last night I was walking through the harbor Where the fishing boats were lying on the shore. The news had traveled fast And everyone came to be Where the mayor was making his speech. And the crowd started cheering when he talked About the glory of it all. And the boys coming home from the war. And he said we were heroes, He said we were fine. We had kings in command, We had God on our side. And he said Nothing will make us change In any way. Since yesterday, We're just the same Since yesterday Nothing has changed Since yesterday We're all the same And I can feel there's a new kind of hunger inside To be satisfied. I saw it there last night.
That's the first verse, and the chorus.
Spanish Train is about God and the Devil playing a poker game; it's really great, in a nineteenth-century folk sort of way. Kind of like "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," only more Dante-esque.
I don't need to be anything other Than a prison guard's son I don't need to be anything other Than a specialist's son I don't have to be anything other Than the birth of two souls in one Part of where I'm going, is knowing where I'm coming from I don't want to be Anything other than what I've been trying to be lately All I have to do Is think of me and I have peace of mind I'm tired of looking 'round rooms Wondering what I've got to do Or who I'm supposed to be I don't want to be anything other than me I'm surrounded by liars everywhere I turn I'm surrounded by imposters everywhere I turn I'm surrounded by identity crisis everywhere I turn Am I the only one who noticed? I can't be the only one who's learned I don't want to be Anything other than what I've been trying to be lately All I have to do Is think of me and I have peace of mind I'm tired of looking 'round rooms Wondering what I've got to do Or who I'm supposed to be I don't want to be anything other than me Can I have everyone's attention please? If you're not like this and that, you're gonna have to leave I came from the mountain The crust of creation My whole situtaion-made from clay to stone And now I'm telling everybody I don't want to be Anything other that what I've been trying to be lately All I have to do Is think of me and I have peace of mind I'm tired of looking 'round rooms Wondering what I've got to do Or who I'm supposed to be I don't want to be anything other than me I don't want to be

You know, picking out my favorite lyric is exactly like picking out a favorite poem.
But I think Tori Amos' "Yes, Anastasia" is probably on top at this specific moment.
quote: I know what you want; the magpies have come. If you know me so well, then tell me which hand I use. Make them go. Make it go. Saw her there, in a restaurant -- Poppy, don't go. I know your mother is a good one, but Poppy, don't go. I'll take you home. Show me the things I've been missin'; show me the ways I forgot to be speaking; show me the ways to get back to the garden; show me the ways to get around the get around; show me the ways to button up buttons that have forgotten they're buttons. (Well, we can't have that forgetting that.)
Girls, girls, what have we done? What have we done to ourselves? Yes.
Driving on the Vine over clotheslines -- but officer, I saw the sign.
Thought I'd been through this in 1919, counting the tears of ten thousand men; I gathered them all, but my feet are slipping. There's something we left on the windowsill. There's something we left. Yes.
(Chorus) We'll see how brave you are. We'll see how fast you'll be running. We'll see how brave you are. Yes, Anastasia.
And all your dollies have friends.
Thought she deserved no less than she'd give. Well, Happy Birthday; her blood's on my hands. It's kind of a shame, 'cause I did like that dress. It's funny the things you find in the rain, the things that you find in, in the mall, in the date-mines, in the knot still in her hair; on the bus, I'm on my way down, on my way down. All the girls seem to be.
(Repeat chorus)
Come along now, little darlin'. Come along now with me. Come along now, little darlin'. We'll see how brave you are.
Now, in all fairness, this song's hard to rate lyrically because, musically, it's all over the map; while any individual section might have meter and rhyme, Amos didn't have to contend with making the whole thing fit one consistent rhyme scheme. For an excellent example of that, try Eve 6.

Tori Amos, Your Cloud. Isn't it sweet? This is how I feel about friends.
Where the river cross crosses the lake Where the words Jump off my pen and into your pages Do you think just like that You can divide This You as yours Me as mine to before we were Us
If the rain Has to separate from Itself does it say "pick out your cloud?" pick out your cloud
If there is a Horizontal Line that runs from the MAP off your body straight through the Land shooting up right through my heart Will this Horizontal Line when asked know how to find Where you end where I begin "pick out your cloud"
How Light can play and form a Ring of Rain that can change bows into arrows (I found a thrill)
Who we were isn't lost Before we were Us Indigo in his own Blue always knew this if the rain Has to separate from Itself does it say pick out your cloud
If there is a Horizontal Line that runs from the MAP off your body straight through the Land shooting up right through my heart Will this Horizontal Line when asked know how to find Where you end where I begin "pick out your cloud"
if the rain Has to separate from Itself does it say pick out your cloud

Tom's right; Eve 6's singer crafts some of the wittiest lyrics I've ever heard:
He reads women's magazines swears the truth doesn't faze him and he knows the hottest bras for fall and how to make her fall in love in four or five days -- or less, guess it depends on the stars and how well he has memorized his dating do's and don't's
(Sunset Strip Bitch)
But I think my favourite lyrics of all time belong to Tool (as I've posted before). First, a two-liner:
Come down Get off your f***ing cross We need the f***ing space to nail the next fool martyr
(Eulogy)
And the single line "I know the pieces fit" is one of my favourite single lines ever.
But the best:
I met a boy wearing Vans, 501s and a dope beastie-t Nipple rings and new tattos that claimed that he was OGT, back from '92, from the first EP and in between sips of Coke he told me that he thought we were selling out laying down, sucking up to the man
Well now I've got some advice for you, little buddy before you point your finger you should know that I'm the man I'm the man and you're the man and he's the man as well So you can point that f***ing finger up your ass
(Hooker with a Penis)
The thing is that it's hard to "rate" lyrics out-of-context; delivery really adds something. Even crappy lyrics can be great in the hands of a really talented vocalist. Radiohead's Karma Police is a good example; I'll always remember the review that described the words as "throwaway lyrics," which is essentially true IMO, but when I saw them live it didn't stop me singing along when Thom Yorke led us in an a capella rendition of the chorus. Another example comes from the opening track of the second Moist album. The song is called Hate. It's a really quiet number, but at one point David Usher just goes "haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate" and you can't help but shiver. The lyrics themselves are so obscure as to be meaningless, but the song itself is compelling.
Anyway. Sorry to interrupt. *returns to semi-lurk mode*

Well, I don't think I could give the "Best Lyrics Ever" even if they were just my humble opinion. I just change my mind to damn often. But anyway, here are some of my favorites.
Deep Red Bells - Neko Case These lyrics are especially powerful in context of the music, and Neko's amazing voice.
quote:Who led you to this hiding place? Whose lightning threats spun silver tongues? The red bells beckon you to ride A handprint on the driver’s side It looks a lot like engine oil and tastes like being poor and small And Popsicles in the summer
Deep red bells, deep as I’ve been done Deep red bells, deep as I’ve been done
It always has to come this Red bells ring this tragic hour We’ve lost sight of the overpass The daylight won’t remember her Those speckled fawns graze ‘round your bones Who took the time to fold your clothes And shook the Valley of the Shadows
Deep red bells, deep as I’ve been done Deep red bells, deep as I’ve been done
Where does this mean world cast its cold eye Who’s left to suffer long about you? Does your soul cast about like an old paper bag, Past empty lots and early graves Of those like you who lost their way, Murdered on the interstate While the red bells rang like thunder
Deep red bells, deep as I’ve been done Deep red bells, deep as I’ve been done Deep red bells, deep as I’ve been done
Black Day in July - Gordon Lightfoot
quote:Black day in july Black day in july Motor city’s burning and the flames are running wild They reflect upon the waters of the river and the lake And everyone is listening And everyone’s awake
Black day in july Black day in july The printing press is turning And the news is quickly flashed And you read your morning paper And you sip your cup of tea And you wonder just in passing Is it him or is it me
Black day in july
In the office of the president The deed is done the troops are sent There’s really not much choice you see It looks to us like anarchy And then the tanks go rolling in To patch things up as best they can There is no time to hesitate The speech is made the dues can wait
Black day in july Black day in july The streets of motor city now are quiet and serene But the shapes of gutted buildings Strike terror to the heart And you say how did it happen And you say how did it start Why can’t we all be brothers Why can’t we live in peace But the hands of the have-nots Keep falling out of reach
Black day in july Black day in july Motor city madness has touched the countryside And through the smoke and cinders You can hear it far and wide The doors are quickly bolted And the children locked inside
Mr. Zebra - Tori Amos
quote:Hello Mr. Zebra Can I have your sweater Cause it's cold cold cold In my hole hole hole Ratatouille Strychnine Sometimes she's a friend of mine With a gigantic whirlpool That will blow your mind Hello Mr. Zebra Ran into some confusion With a Mrs. Crocodile Furry muscles marching on She thinks she's Kaiser Wilhelm Or a civilized syllabub To blow your mind Figure it out She's a goodtime fella She got a little fund to fight for Moneypenny's rights Figure it out She's a goodtime fella Too bad the burial was premature She said and smiled

From Tom Waits's 'Pasties and a G-String (At the Two-O'Clock Club)':
quote:Smelling like a brewery, looking like a tramp, I ain't got a quarter, got a postage stamp Been five o'clock shadow boxing all around the town, Talking with the old man, sleeping on the ground Bazanti bootin al zootin al hoot and Al Cohn Sharing this apartment with a telephone pole And a fish-net stocking, spike-heel shoes, Strip tease, prick tease, car keys blues And the porno floor show, live nude girls, Dreamy and creamy and brunette curls Chesty Morgan and Watermelon Rose Raise my rent and take off all your clothes With trench coats, magazines, a bottle full of rum, She's so good, make a dead man come Pasties and a G-string, beer and a shot Portland through a shot glass and a Buffalo squeeze Wrinkles and Cherry and Twinkie and Pinkie and Fifi live from Gay Paree Fanfares, rim shots, back stage, who cares, all this hot burlesque for me
What's he building in there? What the hell is he building in there? He has subscriptions to those magazines... He never waves when he goes by He's hiding something from the rest of us... He's all to himself... I think I know why... He took down the tire swing from Peppertree He has no children of his own you see... He has no dog and he has no friends and his lawn is dying... And what about all those packages he sends. What's he building in there? with that hook light on the stairs. What's he building in there... I'll tell you one thing He's not building a playhouse for the children What's he building in there?

I think the album Signals from Rush is Underrated. Subdivisions
quote: Growing up it all seems so one-sided Opinions all provided The future pre-decided Detached and subdivided In the mass production zone Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone
The Analog Kid
quote:The boy lies in the grass, unmoving Staring at the sky His mother starts to call him As a hawk goes soaring by The boy pulls down his baseball cap And covers up his eyes
The Weapon
quote:Like a steely blade in a silken sheath We don't see what they're made of They shout about love, but when push comes to shove They live for the things they're afraid of
And my favorite...Loosing it.
quote: The dancer slows her frantic pace In pain and desperation, Her aching limbs and downcast face Aglow with perspiration
Stiff as wire, her lungs on fire, With just the briefest pause The flooding through her memory, The echoes of old applause.
She limps across the floor And closes her bedroom door...
The writer stare with glassy eyes Defies the empty page His beard is white, his face is lined
And streaked with tears of rage.
Loosing It has always seemed so tragic, sad and beautiful. When I hear it or read it, I feel like I am hearing/seeing some of the best poetry-it gets an emotional reaction from me in a beautiful, subtle way.

For me, the finest setting of text to music in the English language is without a doubt Samuel Barber's setting of James Agee's text in "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" for Soprano and orchestra.
"We are talking now of summer evenings in Knoxville Tennessee in the time that I lived there so successfully disguised to myself as a child. ...It has become that time of evening when people sit on their porches, rocking gently and talking gently and watching the street and the standing up into their sphere of possession of the trees, of birds' hung havens, hangars. People go by; things go by. A horse, drawing a buggy, breaking his hollow iron music on the asphalt: a loud auto: a quiet auto: people in pairs, not in a hurry, scuffling, switching their weight of aestival body, talking casually, the taste hovering over them in vanilla, strawberry, pasteboard, and starched milk, the image upon them of lovers and horsemen, squaring with clowns in hueless amber. A streetcar raising its iron moan; stopping; belling and starting, stertorous; rousing and raising again its iron increasing moan and swimming its gold windows and straw seats on past and past and past, the bleak spark crackling and cursing above it like a small malignant spirit set to dog its tracks; the iron whine rises on rising speed; still risen, faints; halts; the faint stinging bell; rises again, still fainter; fainting, lifting, lifts, faints foregone: forgotten. Now is the night one blue dew.
Now is the night one blue dew, my father has drained, he has coiled the hose. Low in the length of lawns, a frailing of fire who breathes... Parents on porches: rock and rock. From damp strings morning glories hang their ancient faces.
The dry and exalted noise of the locusts from all the air at once enchants my eardrums.
On the rough wet grass of the back yard my father and mother have spread quilts. We all lie there, my mother, my father, my uncle, my aunt, and I too am lying there... They are not talking much, and the talk is quiet, of nothing in particular, of nothing at all in particular, of nothing at all. The stars are wide and alive, they seem each like a smile of great sweetness, and they are very near. All my people are larger bodies than mine,... with voices gentle and meaningless like the voices of sleeping birds. One is an artist, he is living at home. One is a musician, she is living at home. One is my mother who is good to me. One is my father who is good to me. By some chance, here they are, all on this earth; and who shall ever tell the sorrow of being on this earth, lying, on quilts, on the grass, in the summer evening, among the sounds of the night. May God bless my people, my uncle, my aunt, my mother, my good father, oh, remember them kindly in their time of trouble; and in the hour of their taking away. After a little I am taken in and put to be. Sleep, soft smiling, draws me unto her: and those receive me, who quietly treat me, as one familiar and well-beloved in that home: but will not, no ,will not, not now, not ever; but will not ever tell me who I am."
Of course, this is my reaction to Barber's setting of the text as much as the text itself.

Some of my favorite lyrics are from Massive Attack:
quote:Recollect me darling, raise me to your lips Two undernourished egos, four rotating hips
- Inertia Creeps
quote:Don't be afraid Open your mouth to say Say what your soul sings to you
Your mind can never change Unless you ask it to Lovingly rearrange The thoughts that make you blue The things that bring you down Will mean no harm to you And so make your choice joy The joy belongs to you
And when you do You'll find the one you love is here
