So the bumping of the weight loss thread reminded me of the laundry “debate” we had going on. Basically I said that I never sorted whites and colors and just did everything in one big batch. And of course everyone said I was crazy.
Well a good number of months ago I decided it was time to put my theories to the test, and move in time for school was the opportune time to do so. I took a dark blue, never been washed, bed-sheet and put it in the wash in either warm or hot (I really don’t remember which, I think hot but I’m not 100% sure) wash with purtty’ pure white shirts. When they came out there was a vague tint of blue, hard to notice but there, and after they went through the drier, not a spot.

If I have a big enough laundry pile, or something new, I'll usually separate them. If not, I usually toss 'em all together. After I check the pockets. I've lost more clothes in one load with unchecked pockets than I ever have to bleeding dyes.

I throw all my colors (red, orange, green, blues) together with my whites. I don't have much in either group so it just makes sense for me to do it, and I've never had a problem with the dyes bleeding.

Yeah... I accidentally washed a load of whites with one red sock once. Turned my husband's favorite t-shirt pale pink.

See I always wash all of my clothes together. True I don't have anything that's bright red, but there is red and I've never had a problem with any color.

Yeah, most reds in men's clothes are ok on warm (wouldn't recommend hot). But don't try that when you get married; for some reason, many more of my clothes are apt to bleed than my husband's. Posts: 21182 | Registered: Sep 2004

Maybe clothes manufacturers realize many men will not bother with separating the clothes and so use dyes that won't bleed as much. I am just guessing. Posts: 188 | Registered: Aug 2003

If I have to wash colors and whites together, I use cold water. No bleeding as of yet. But if I'm just doing a load of towels, I use hot water. *shrug* Worked so far. I also have to watch out with my fencing clothes, because it has to be cold water and canNOT be put in the dryer.

Do not wash a perfect white pleated tux shirt you have to wear the next day to an orchestra concert with a red shirt! nope not good, multiple people will yell at you, including the person who sorts and measures uniforms (it'll be worst if she's your mom), the orchestra conductor, and anyone who know's your mom is in charge of uniforms, not a pretty site. Of course I never did anything like that. (insert halo smiley)

It says to use 1/4 cup per washing load - I never use that much.
I've washed, as an experiment, a freshly dyed red scarf (with the dye still wet) and a white t-shirt and the shirt stayed white.

And the dryer is a great iron! Just throw in the wrinkled article with a wet washcloth. When you’re done in the shower. Poof! Nice warm wrinkle free whatever. Sweetness!

I washed a white bathroom rug and a black bathroom rug together last week. The white rug came out gray, mostly, with white patches.

I usually wait until i have a few loads to do before I do laundry. So I have a small whites load, a brights load, a black load, and a neutrals/ light colors load.
