I sent out an e-mail invitation to a farewell party for I3 to around 40 people an hour or so ago. I only actually know maybe 10 people on this list.
I just got the first RSVP, in the positive, and I realized... I'm going to be receiving bunches of "extra" e-mail in the next few days, a good chunk of it from people I don't know telling me they'd love to come to my party! How cool is that?
What's happened to you that made you feel more popular/cooler than it probably should have?

When people have heard about me before they've even met me. ("You're Ken? Some friends of mine from Illinois met you!") This has happened to me a bunch of times, and usually I've forgotten who the "friends" who met me were, so I wonder what I did to impress them, I mean I probably didn't rescue them from a fire or anything...

When I was a freshman in college, I was vice president of the State FFA Association. I was on all sorts of TV and radio interviews, gave presentations at high schools all over the state, and gave a farewell address to an audience of 1,000 at state convention.
Consequently, all sorts of young cowpokes know me and greet me and talk to me and I have no idea who they are. Ag teachers from across the state know me as well, and it took me awhile to realize that recognizing a familiar face isn't the same as liking the person. I overheard a couple teachers once criticizing the silliness of a presentation that my fellow state officers and I put on and I felt pretty sheepish for my previous delusions of grandeur.

A lot of people that I've been in class with or whatnot know my name, but I don't know any of theirs. So all the time people come up to me and say, "Hi Abby!" and I do not for the life of me remember who they are, least of all what their names are.
That makes me feel popular, even if it's just because of my bad memory.

When I was preparing to move to Maui 4 years ago, people I'd never met came up to me at school and asked if I was the one moving to Maui... it got to be unnerving after a while.

Yesterday... I went to the second meeting of a class that I had registered late for. There were a bunch of people in there who hadn't been the previous lecture, so she made us stay behind, to catch us up.
She went to every student:
"What's your name?" "Becky." "What's your name?" "Eva."
So on and so forth... when she got to me, she said:
"Are you Shani?"
O_O It was so crazy!

My dog would like to share his story. (Don't you hate morons that pretend that their dog's the one writing?)
My name's Riley. I'm a current Sheltie and a former therapy dog. I used to have several nursing homes on my regular beat. I used to go there to see the people and socialize with my friends - Paddy the Beagle Mix, and Sam the golden mix. There was also a girl dog there that was a submissive wetter so she wore a diaper ... but so did a lot of people we were seeing so it all worked out.
Oh, and our people were there of course - they were significant only because they brought treats and forced us to wear lame outfits. (My mother actually had 80 bandanas for me, may she rot in hell for her perverse canine fashion sense. You know I'm kidding, right mom? Scratch Riley Baby's belly, would ja?)
Anyhow, the people at the nursing homes would make a big deal out of seeing us. Well, seeing the dogs - the people holding the leashes were pretty irrelevent to them other than to answer questions about us.
There was one woman that hadn't spoken in months but mom told her it was my birthday so the lady said, "Happy Birthday, Riley." People were always offering for me to nap with them too, but I had lots of people to see. There was one lady that would yell "my doggies" everytime she saw us.
It was a lot of fun except Paddy was always trying to hump me. (Paddy is not to be confused with Paddington - he's my brother that's in heaven. I kept on asking Paddington to toss down some biscuits but he's apparently hogging them. Some angelic attitude!) Anyhow, this Beagle wanted my ass so I had to be on guard. It did make me feel really popular though, which is the point on this thread.
I also saved my dumbassed sister - Mitzi the cat - from being mauled to death by dogs. She snuck out of the house and found that not every canine is as tolerant as the ones she lives with. We chase her, we chew on her a little, but it's all fun and games.
Oh, one time the lady next door hit the sauce a little too much and passed out in the snow in January. I told my people and they helped out. The next day she said she has slipped and hit her head, but please, her breath was higher proof than a bottle of Smirnoff's. Not that *I* drink ... although the time I woke up and my testicles were gone I was sorely tempted.
My mom calls me the Good Cookie Boy, my dad tells me I'm an excellent helper, I have had no break-ins since on duty ... It all makes me feel pretty popular. More popular than I probably am ... but as long as the kibble keeps coming I don't care.
I'm also studying why relatively intelligent people (intelligent - yeah right) insist on praticing anthropomorphism. Love. Riley

I tend to wear clothes for so long that they come back into style. I am cool and fashionable for a few months.

I often go places and people will wave at me and say "Hi Tracy!" and I will have no idea who they are -- but they remember ME, and that makes me happy.
Or people that call our support line and specifically ask for me, because they think I'm very nice, even if they've never met me IRL, and that makes me feel loved and popular.

I talk a lot in my classes this semester, mostly because I'm so freaking happy to be in classes that reflect my interests. Apparently I've been talking a little too much too passionately, because yesterday two different classmates I didn't know approached me after class, one saying she had seen a TV show that reminded her of me and one saying my husband had to be an English major too. It was weird thinking people I didn't even know the names of were thinking about me outside of class.

I have had similar experiences to Ryuko and Farmgirl. Mostly at parties with people I went to high school with. Not that I have absolutely no idea who they are, but I don't know what their names are. Something like:
"Hey, you're Phil right?"
"Yeah. Hey how's it going?"
That's how I normally deal with it. It always boggles my mind that they know my name, since I have usually never talked to them before. I was not very popular at school.
Yes, I was... but she didn't have a list of names, these were all latecomers, so she didn't have them on her attendance sheet. So it's not like she was checking names off and got to me! She just pulled that out of nowhere.

That happens to me, too, but usually it scares me a little because I know I must have done something to make an impression on them...
(More often than not, though, turns out they just have a good memory for names where I have a horrid one.)

Story time. I might have told this one at Hatrack before, but it fits this thread nicely.
I was working at Forest Home (summer after the one in my 4K landmark), and I was waiting in line for breakfast. I overheard someone behind me talking about his high school, and it at least had the same name as mine, even if it wasn't the same school, and "Gompers" isn't that common a name for a school, so I turned around.
Me: "Did you say you went to Gompers? The one in San Diego?"
Him: "Yeah, I graduated in 1989! You went there?"
Me: "Sure did -- 1981 to 1987."
Him: "So you probably knew some people who graduated before I did."
Me: "Chances are pretty good, yeah. I knew a lot of people."
Him: "Like... Mike Sloan."
<pause>
Me: "I am Mike Sloan."
<pause>
Him: "No you're not."
Me: "Wanna see ID?"
Him: "Yeah!"
<I show ID>
Him: "You came up to me the first day of school and told me what my password was."
Me: "Yeah, I did that a lot, too."
. . .
Later that summer he got kicked off staff and sent home for stalking my girlfriend. I guess my high school turned out some winners. Perhaps that can serve to put my "popularity" in perspective.... *sigh*

No, she meant whenever Hatrack is "down," as in down in the dumps, SakeRiver brings her up. I'm sure that is what she meant. Sure of it.
