Last Monday, I had guests at my home. Maccabeus had been visiting all weekend, and the Ketchup family drove up for the day.
We met at my house, had breakfast, and headed out for the day. First stop: grocery store to pick up bottled water and ice for the cooler.
I ran in while everyone else waited in the cars. The bag boy carried the water and ice, which I took from him after I set my keys and phone down next to the cooler.
I got the water and ice into the cooler quickly, and we were off to the Tulsa Zoo. When we got there, I passed out cool water and started organizing things for our outing.
Keys, check. Baby carrier, check. Kids, check. Zoo pass...it's in my wallet. Where's my wallet? It's not in the daiper bag. It's not under the seat. It's not here! Oh crap! I must have left it at the store!
Five minutes on hold to the grocery store and they hung up on me. So I called my husband. He raced down there...no wallet. He came home, to a ringing telephone. It's the police department. "We've found the wallet."
They left my driver's license, my zoo pass, the extra zoo tickets I had, and a few other things. My credit cards were gone. My bank card was gone. My sister's checkbook was gone. The plastic insert that had pictures of my kids and some random business cards: gone. The theives ripped every single seam in my wallet.
All day, my husband was on the phone with credit card companies. My sister had to go to her bank, freeze her account and completely change it to a new one...she's a truck driver, and can't get mail on the road. (No ATM card or checks until she comes back.) I had to go file a police report instead of go bowling with my kids and friends.
Two days later, my husband's truck is in the shop. We go to pick it up: every single penny out of the change holder was stolen. Must have been over $30.

Wow, mack -- you're getting pretty upset just because Boon spelled thieves wrong.
Boon, I'm sorry you went through this, and on top of an already not-quite-as-jovial-as-planned weekend. I hope things get better, and importantly, that there are no residual problems from the wallet. (((You)))

We had a good time at the zoo, and I managed to make an employee at the bowling place happy...and we visited for a while in my yard while the kids played in the pools. So the day was not wasted. It was just frustrating.
And, embarrassed as I am about the misspelling, now that I've been called out on it I'll let it stand, as-is.

Did your husband speak to the owner of the repair shop about the stolen $30? Most shop owners don't like thieves working for them and ripping off their customers.

Well, since we picked the truck up after hours, and it was left unlocked, we don't know that it was an employee. But he did tell them what happened, and the owner apologized but didn't offer to replace the money, even though it was their fault the truck was left unlocked. So we'll not be going back to that place.

But on the up side, the kids were much better for us and Mabeus than they probably would have been for their mom, and Boo got a nice nap.

It's just ridiculous nowadays where you can trust people, it would be easy for who ever found the wallet to give it back. The world has become a little to greedy nowadays, but there are some that still make it good.

To be fair, it's not like the truck had a lightbar on it (anymore).
Also, to be fair, the thief may have missed the OEM tag...but it may have been harder to miss all the firefighter stickers plastered to the back of the truck...and the emergency equipment (including several fire extinguishers) in the back...and the first aid stuff...

Well, they shouldn't be stealing in the first place.
But, like, I guess I could see someone thinking other people owe them a living because they have life so much easier or something (even though they don't, and if they did, stealing wouldn't be the way to right things.) I can even see having a grudge against cops or something.

I can certainly sympathize with you, Boon. Last winter thieves broke into my shop and stole about 8,000 dollars worth of equipment. It makes you feel so angry and helpless. I'm not a violent person but stuff like this makes me wish I could catch the thief in action and beat the crap out of them. I hope things get better for ya.
