Sometimes it is fun to try to guess what the commercial is supposed to be pushing, ie when all that happens in the commercial is kissing, etc. Honestly, sometimes I have no idea what the commercial is for!

See, this is what happens when you insist on watching television. Go read a book, or play a computer game, or post on Hatrack, or something else productive.

Irratating ads-

Those stupid Sierra Mist ads. I used to like that soda, now why would I want to buy it just to give them the money to make more stupid commercials?
The McDonald's ads. Could that song BE more annoying?
The Burger King commercials with those stupid people in the office acting dumb.
That Taco Bell ad with the guy saying "Good to go." and the ad with the people making up stupid words.
Those furniture commercials where the guy says, "I doubt it." I want to hit him and his wife with a nasty dirty stinky TROUT.

Frishe's Big Boy (I don't know if these are just local or if they adapt them for whatever the Big Boy chain goes by locally, but they are the worst.

I used to really hate the Capitol One commercials with the barbarians until they came out with the new ones where they are in new jobs. It makes the other commercials worth it just to get to these.

The Geico caveman commercials. Geico use to have the coolest commercials with the gecko, but the whole caveman thing. It sucks.

And Wendys' commercials. Again, I used to love their commercials, when Dave Thomas was still alive and doing them to promote childrens hockey, and camps and such. And then they made that line of commercials with that 'unofficial spokesman' guy, which were just dumb (I think they finally relized that). And now it's some lady who cries when she can't decide what side to choose. It's terrible, they should just replay the old ones with Thomas in them.

I hate the radio commercials that have those really catchy, snappy jingles, that get stuck in your head. You find yourself singing about getting "better carpteting for less" or "patio furniture and garden supplies".

Anyone from my area will recognise these jingles and curse me for making them start humming them, too.

Lately I haven't watched a lot of TV so I am not up on all the commercials. One that bugs me though is for mattresses and it shows a sleep-derprived wife hitting her husband on the head w/a frying pan. Their intent is to be funny, however, I find it abusive.

On all the mattress commercials, they show someone fully dressed, on a bare mattress, tossing and turning.

I think they'd sleep better if they changed into pajamas, put some sheets, blankets, and pillows on the bed. And, oh yeah, turned off the lights.

Complaining about stupid commercials is like complaining that it hurts when you bite your arm.

Stop doing it!

Commercials are intelligent tv's bane. Not only do they often turn people off watching, they also disrupt the flow of the action in whatever you happen to be watching. You also forget details you otherwise would have remembered about the show which simplifies the show into basically a series of events rather than an unfolding story which builds on itself.

Because tv is already a pretty "quick" medium (most stories take place in half an hour or an hour) it's sort of like reading a short story but stopping every page to check the internet. It practically fosters ADD-like behavior.

As a result, people want simpler tv that can be disrupted with ruining the story or tension. Therefore, tv becomes more stupid, therefore bright people dislike the stupidity of tv, therefore there is less demand for intelligence.

Now that tv shows are so often sold on DVD or downloaded or watched on tv on demand I believe the intelligence level of shows will go up. Not conciously, perhaps, but because people will be able to watch tv and process all the information without the disruption and distraction of commercials.

</theory [Wink] >

One commercial that makes me chuckle when I see it is the one for the memory foam mattress. You know, the one which costs like a bajillion dollars.

They start the commercial showing a fairly unattractive middle aged couple tossing and turning.

Then they cut to a gorgeous young couple sleeping peacefully on one of their mattresses. The beautiful woman even has a silky looking nighty on.

Apparently the mattress does more than help you sleep. Its also the fountain of youth and beauty too!

Local car dealership ads, So bad they sometimes become funny.

I have pretty much given up on TV lately. But once Football gets started I will be force to watch commercials again. Thank God for the remote and the fact there are usually a couple of games on at time. Fortunately, they don’t advertise hygiene products during the games and of course some of the beer ads are funny.

Tom, Tivo isn't going to help with those radio ads. I listen to NPR, but sometimes my mind just needs to break free of the soothing, boring voices that keep considering all things. And have you ever noticed how not-so-fresh the Fresh Air is?

So, it is snappy jingles, fast-talking car dealership ads, and that ad that begins with the sirens, the one that always has me looking into my rear view mirror to see if I'm being pulled over.

Fie on Tivo. If you need it, it means you are watching TV too much.

Far better that you should be on Hatrack too much.

I also listen to Internet radio and download regular radio onto my PC, via a program which automatically strips out advertising. [Smile] I don't encounter many ads, unless of course someone posts one to Hatrack.

It's odd, but the Internet is actually my primary source for advertising nowadays.

I am still confused by the tire company out there that insists that sexy people doing sexy dances have anything to do with what type of tire I want on my car.

And you have to respect perfume commercials. Here they are selling outrageously priced smells using a medium that offers everything but the aroma itself or any description of that aroma.

Tom, once again, you prove yourself to be superior to the average guy. I'm firmly entrenched with the plebian masses, riding around in my nasty little car, spinning the radio dial to pull the signals out of the un-rarified air.

I'll stop my complaining. It only reinforces my inferiority. [Frown]

On my way home, the local NPR station has its music on. While some of it annoys the crap out of me (there's a reason some of those artists have never picked up a mainstream audience), it's almostly completely commercial-free (I count NPR advertizing itself as an advertisment). On the ride into work, I get my dose of news from Morning Edition (if I were gay, I'd totally have the hots for Steve Inskeep) and on the way home, I get good music. Win-win!

Yeah Dan, but those "wheel goes round" ads are some of the more entertaining TV commercials out there.

The Leptoprin commercial is one that makes me want to gouge my eyes out. As well as the Countrywide ones with the fat guy talking.

I hate any commercial for a medication that doesn't tell you what the medication does or what it is supposed to treat. I also hate commercials for Home Shopping Network. If I wanted to buy stuff from them, I would already be watching that channel. And those Daisy sour cream ads. It's far too catchy a tune.

OK, the movie theater ads before movies (like that gawdawful Fanta thing) are even lower than the normal TV ads. They know they've got a captive audience, and it shows.

Dairy Queen: last year it was the guy who stuck his tongue in the mixer and turned it on. Now they have a guy talking about chicken and some other guys put him in the trunk of a car and drive off. Considering the recent deaths of three boys in New Jersey, it seems a bit irresponsible to have a commercial like that. Yes, I know it's just a commercial. But it's stupid and irresponsible.
