Just finished watching the pilot of Firefly.

Damn, that's good. "If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed."

They really thought the pilot wasn't good enough to show on TV?

Crazy network executives.

I watched Serenity tonight, and we were talking about this.

Someone at Fox is very, very upset right now.

Not really. Fox got a pretty good chunk from SciFi for the syndication rights, and they're getting paid from the DVD sales as well. And a show can't become a cult classic if you leave it on the air.

No, I agree. I would have loved if Firefly woulda had a few more seasons. But what's happened with it since it really the best possible scenario for a cancelled show.

*disagrees* Buffy was a cult classic while it was on air. So was Freaks and Geeks. I'm sure there are others and I think that Firefly totally could have been one of them. [Frown]

I'm sure Fox execs are laughing all the way to bank. Every person who see the movie is a potential person who will buy the complete series. The movie is just one long commercial for the TV series DVD set.

For them, see, it's all about ratings. You know what I think would get great ratings? Ritual sacrifices of network executives that cancel great shows.

Think we could sell 'em on THAT?

Fox has cancelled more shows I really like than any other network. But, then, Fox was the only network that ran shows like Brisco County, Jr. and Space: Above and Beyond. UPN and WB were desperate enough to give Buffy and Angel decent runs. Maybe if Firefly had been on UPN it would still be on.

If BSG is profitable for SFN, maybe new Firefly episodes would be, too. Any news on that front?

Family Guy was. And Buffy, although it never went off the air.

To expand the geekiness notion, Firefly is exactly the kind of feel I liked when I played Traveler. Small arms expertise, fast ships with no arms, special forces and caper adventures.

*nods fervently*

I've always considered the episodes in the middle--Shindig, Our Mrs. Reynolds, Jayne's Town, and Out of Gas--as the best ones.

Of course, that is subject to hours and hours of fun debate among flans.

Family Guy is a great example. Buffy was never actually cancelled; it just jumped networks. The WB would have liked to have kept it. Grounded for Life would qualify, though: cancelled by Fox, picked up by the WB.

With that said, my understanding is that if Firefly were to return to the small screen, it'd have to be on Fox, and that Joss is not particularly inclined to go through that again.

Not quite cancelled, but a definate network jump of a similar vein would be Stargate SG-1. Come to think of it, why do all these shows being mentioned have some relationship with Fox...

But also because the original 3 networks haven't put anything this good on in years, so there's little danger of them cancelling such a good show.

F&G excepted.

In fairness to Fox, Dagonee makes a good point above: Fox cancels a whole lot of shows, but it's also willing to give all sorts of weird stuff a chance, stuff that'd never see the light of day anywhere else. This puts them in the position to cancel more innovative shows than other networks, but that coin does have two sides.

Yes, but it's heartbreaking sometimes. I mean, I went from Firefly to Wonderfalls to The Inside. All of which were cancelled in the same time frame, all of which were excellent beyond mortal television and all of which have (or will) hit as a DVD collection.

At least Tim Minnear's maintained a positive attitude about the whole thing.
