The Russians, apparently.

Scott Stevens explains how the hurricanes are a result of a Russian plot to destroy our energy infrastructure. The storms are engineered via a secret Russian weather control machine.

Evidence to support this allegation includes the fact that "Katrina" and "Ivan" are Russian-sounding names.

Also, during the Cold War, Khrushchev boasted that the Russians were developing new weapons, the like of which had never before been seen.

Hurricane-producing weapons have never before been seen. Quod erat demonstrandum, Katrina.

It's not Zoidberg, Avatar.
Obviously the ones to blame are the gas station sandwich parasites.

Before we completely dismiss this, do we have any scientific types that understand what he's claiming and comment on it?

Yeah. A friend of mine who lives in Idaho sent me a clipping about this guy. I didn't see anything about it in the link, but according to the article he believes Katrina was actually caused by the Yazuka - the Japanese mafia - using the described Russian technology. Apparently, he thinks they did this because their still ticked off about Hiroshima. Or something.

Me? I think the guy has been listening to Art Bell too much.

That's a very nice Mississippi Delta you've got yourself there...It'd be a shame if anything should happen to it, if you get my drift.

I think Katrina's dad is to blame. If he weren't so emotionally distant, Katrina wouldn't have gone off and misbehaved so badly in an effort to get his attention.

You can't blame Katrina's dad for this. It's all about personal responsibility.

human_2.0, I'm a scientific type and it's total nonsense. If the Russians had such a weapon as this guy claims, why did they lose the cold war? A cursory think-through using common sense is sufficient to refute these claims. The guy may be clinically paranoid, he may really believe it. But scientifically it's complete bunk.

I thought it was parody to start with, but I don't think it was.

Edward Kennedy said it was Bush's fault, because the US didn't sign Kyoto and we're at war in Iraq. How do we decide which crazy people are to be ignored?

1) That wasn't USSenator Edward(Teddy)Kennedy, it was RobertF.KennedyJr.
2) GlobalWarming is implicated as a cause of the increase in hurricane strength.
3) Carbon dioxide -- which the KyotoTreaty is intended to reduce -- is a greenhouse gas implicated as a cause of GlobalWarming.

Or we could just say that Dubya is responsible for what comes out of PatRobertson's mouth.
Ted ain't Robert just like Dubya ain't Pat.

Sorry I got the wrong Kennedy.

I won't get into the claim that anthropogenic global warming is the cause of Category 4 hurricanes (!). But: surely everyone here knows that the Kyoto accords died in the Senate in the 1990's, when Bush was governor of Texas. For Bush to cause this -- as President at least -- he would have needed a time machine.

I like to think some day scientists will figure out how to control the weather. I can see how others might want to think that, and likewise decide that scientists already have! Thus it makes it easy to believe the claim that it is the Russians fault. Actually, I could believe the Japanese did it easier than the Russians. I've met some bitter Japanese people (just a few very very bitter ones--all older who remember WWII).

Of course I know the claim is bunk. I'm just saying how these people might have twisted their minds to accept this.

Ah, yes, people will believe any crazy thing, it seems like. During nearly all disasters, there are ugly rumors blaming the disaster on whomever people don't like. During the Spanish Flu H1N1 pandemic in 1918, when so many people died, there were rumors that the Germans were responsible for the flu, for instance. They're sort of like urban lagends or something. People love to blame everything bad on witches, or Republicans, or The Russians, or gays... didn't that one dude already blame it on gays? Whom did I leave out? Oh yeah, rebellious women, Mormons, weak men, two faced people, and potheads.

You can certainly see how human sacrifice gets started. Maybe if we burn all the whomever-we-hate at the stake, then God will quit sending hurricanes, you think? It's worth a try. Anyway, I'm mad because of what happened and that will give me a good carthartic release for my pent up emotions. [Big Grin]

So, if the Soviets, er Russians have a weather machine, then why wouldn't they use it to turn up the thermostat in their little part of the world?

I also seem to remember someone on the internet blaming the world trade center attacks on the Swedes.
