To be fair, this is -probably- temporary. Apparently it's part of another big Marvel crossover event in which a bunch of secondary characters will be killed off and a bunch of major heroes "messed up" in the name of short term sales boosts.
Still, it's pretty darn ugly.

I think that the standard blue-red Spider-Man costume is one of the lamest superhero costumes around.

Please! That's what makes it so powerful! He's not Bruce Wayne, with the resources to get all sorts of nifty gadgets. Nor is he that macho man perversion called Superman. He's just a kid with greatness thrust upon him... it's fitting!

And who knows, maybe this suit will ALSO be some sort of sentient life form, which PP ends up discarding in favor of the good 'ol traditional, that ends up making its way to one of Spidey's worst enemies, thus creating one of the greatest arch-rivalries ever!
Also, it's entirely possible they're doing another series (ala 2099) or creating a second Spidey (ala Green Lantern).

Oh, the envy. I didn't even know they made a complete collection - now I have to go find it and buy it and eat it with strawberries.

Oh, and he had 4 costumes at once during Identity Crisis. But I think most fans want to forget those 2-3 years surrounding that never happened.

Actually, you're right. Superman's new powers (that brought on the Blue and White look) debuted in late '96, but the costume/azure skin pallor didn't turn up until early '97.

According to Marvel, the wearer of the suit will be Peter Parker, of the normal Marvel Universe, in the modern time.
The suit's designed by Tony Stark, or something.
(Right up there with the Iron Man suit that included a nose, design-wise.)

Say, did you know that a recent Fantastic 4 story by JMS (the "Babylon 5" guy) revealed that the entire Marvel Universe was created by Reed Richards? Including the "accident" that turned Ben Grimm into the Thing?
He's also the guy who revealed Gwen Stacy was in love with the Green Goblin and bore his illegitmate children.

He doesn't wear that one because it resembles the alien costume that tried to take over him...and eventually became Venom.

Well, given the whole The Other storyline going on currently and all the changes made to Peter's character, it was only to be expected that they were going to revamp the costume ... amongst other things. They are also talking about an "unexpected" new villain - don't tell me they're bringing Ben Reilly back from the dead as a villain a la what I believe is going on over in Batman with the Red Hood thing (don't know what that really is about - haven't read any of it ) But if this is the final costume design, it's just too ugly ... and way too much like Iron Man's ... but then again, I guess that is the point.

OK, for anybody who cares (is there anybody who actually cares about Spidey's costume that much besides me? ), here's what Marvel has to say about the whole thing:
Word has been building for months now, and comic fans have been dying to know- what is Spider-Man’s new costume?! Well, folks, here it is! Recognize the color scheme? You should, it’s playing an important role in the future of the web-slinger!
After the shocking events in "The Other" storyline, Peter recieves this new costume to help him adjust to his newest developments, as well as giving him some added muscle! Designed by Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada, this new design has a few tricks up its sleeve. "The Iron Spider design- as I like to call it- came to me during a Spider-Man story meeting we were having, we were talking and I was involuntarily sketching on a pad. It's inspired by a sketch that Chris Bachalo did that showed a new Spidey costume with <CLASSIFIED>. I thought that was brilliant, especially since it echoed one of Spidey's greatest villains, and I took the idea and imagined it as though seeing it through the eyes of Tony Stark. The sky's the limit with respect to gadgetry when it comes to Tony inspired costumes."
Every "gift" has its cost, and this new look for Spidey will signal the beginnings of change, especially as it comes on the eve of the upcoming Civil War. Spider-Man has developed a growing trust and friendship with Iron Man, but how much in debt is Peter’s loyalty to Tony Stark going to cost him in the long run? If the color scheme is any indication, well... Joe Quesada says, "I imagined Tony presenting Peter with the new suit and Peter putting it on and saying that it looks great but that his colors are red and blue. Tony would simply respond, ‘My design, my colors!’"
What is it that Joe is talking about that’s classified? How will Spidey’s relationship to Tony - and the new costume- play into Civil War?! You’ll have to read the books to see! But, it is safe to say that when it comes to this new costume, there is much more to the story! Look for the new costume to debut in February’s Amazing Spider-Man #529. It will then be seen in the pages of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Marvel Knights Spider-Man in April. For more news on Spider-Man, the costume, and Civil War, stay tuned, True Believers!

LOL. To be technical, I have a feeling that Peter's new costume is not going to be exactly clothing - it's probably a version of the armour that Iron Man wears ... yes, I know, way too much comics information for anybody

For some reason Fahim reminds me of Tzadik, the way they both come across online. It's probably just the "Dear Hatrack, I'm getting married and moving to..." aspect of them both that makes me see other similarities.

I don't see why everyone's so attached to the costume. Comics, by their very nature, are transient and subject to change.

Tzadik posted a "Dear Hatrack, I'm getting married and moving to..."? But then, Fahim didn't either... He merely posted in it and was the object of the thread. Hmm.

True, but how many comic characters have had their pasts re-written to better suit the author's ideas?

And yet, several times writers have tried to put their own stamp on an iconic character only to have readers reject it and pretend it never happened. Clone Saga, anyone? Anyone really think Gwen had children?
When the characters stray too far from what made them icons, their story fails and readers complain or go away. Occasionally reinventions and reinterpretations can succeed but only if they can tap into what made the character great in the first place (and here I'm thinking Ultimate Spiderman) and only if the original character is left more or less alone.

Not entirely, but it is vital. An icon is immediately recognizable. The costume is part of that. Minor details can change - whether or not he has underarm webs, Superman's hair length, the color of Batman's chest symbol - but the version that people recognize becomes important.
