May this post bring you laughter, and please...I need hugs. It's that bad... [Cry]

I just received a wonderful 1GB iRiver T10 Mp3 player for the holiday season. Wonderful! Bless my mother for she knows me too well!

Anyway, I am beating my head on my monitor (a techie) trying to transfer songs onto the darn thing.

See, iRiver apparently decided, that opening up the portable device folder on Windows Explorer, and dragging files/folders into it however you wanted, was too easy to go about managing your digital music experience. [Dont Know]

Now, Earendil has to use Windows Media Player 10, conveniently included, in order to transfer files onto the device.

Fine, whatevah. Let's go about doing that.

(reads manual)
{Most of you're music should be in the WMP library, if not check help in WMP Help.)
READ: There is no other media player/playlist/library than Windows Media Player. [Roll Eyes]

I use Winamp but...

Fine, whatevah.

So first off, I need to find a way to take my 900+ song playlist from Winamp, and put it into WMP.

IMPORT PLAYLIST! Yes! Oh, wait it doesn't support .PLS, ok, save as .M3U playlist and import.

Ok there it is. Good.

(reads manual)
(Locate a Song or Playlist in the Library and Right-Click on it.
Select "Add to -Sync List".
A "Sync list" will appear on the right side of WMP listing all the Songs & Playlists to be added to your player.
Repeat.)

Well shoot, that's not all going to fit on there. I need to reorganize and prioritize what types of songs I want on the player, and group them into the major genres that I like. Also make sure they're plenty of subfolders so it's not a big mess in there.

Fine, whatevah.

Let's see I'll have folder for soundtracks, electronic, video game music, jazz, new age, and miscellaneous (sp?).

Oh hey! There's a nice button right up here under that says, Create Folder, and it creates a subfolder on the iRiver! Cool!

*creates under the Music folder, subfolders for all the genres*

Ok, I need to select which songs I want in my soundtrack folder.

*goes through 900+ songs in 10 minutes clicking little checkboxes in WMP*

Ok add those suckers to the synclist!

*adds suckers to synclist*

Ok, now I don't want them going to the Music folder, so I'll make sure the soundtracks folder is expanded there

*clicks little plus sign to expand folder*

SYNC!

Convert copy covert copy

STOP!

No convert, I like the bitrates thank you!

Copy, copy, copy, copy...

*plays a medium Sukoku puzzle in 17 minutesish*

Done!

Ok, now let's check this out here.

...

Why are there 5 new folders? I didn't create those. I just wanted them in this folder I created right here. *clickieclickie*

*Deletes new folders and notices that none of the songs went in to the folder that was created by Earendil for Soundtracks* [Frown]

*hunts around and finds a little button that turns off automatic folder hierarchy in WMP*

Ok, this should work now. Let me try just one song though.

*Creates a Deus Ex subfolder, under Games folder, under Music, and syncs 1 Deus Ex song, with GAMES folder highlighted this time and fully expanded*

Ok, let's check it.
Why did it create a folder called "Unknown Artist". I told it to put it in here! Didn't I?

(reads manual)
(Click Start Sync to xfer the songs or playlists on to the T10 player. When complete, copied songs will appear in the "Synch to Device" list on the left side of WMP and in the specified folder on the right side of the screen)

*looks at right side of screen*

I've highlighted/selected my nice sparkly folder, so why does it keep creating directories and not going where I want it to? [Confused]

GO! *clickie* [Mad]
NO! *clicke clickie clickie*
iRiver.com! *clickie clickie "Just read the manual and enjoy your music!"
Google! *Update your firmware! New uber software for NOT YOUR MODEL!"

Maybe I can dump all the files on there and then rearrange and reorganize-NOPE! When you click that button, by GOLLY, those songs are where they are, no foolin'!

Why does WMP allow me to create sub/folders on my MP3 player, and refuse to dump my songs into those folders? [Dont Know]

I either get newly created directories, which defeat the purpose of creating my own hierarchy, or I get them all lined up in one gigantic list that isn't even in the Music folder, but the bloody ROOT folder!

Is the create folder button just to taunt people???

I am asking...no....BEGGING from hatrackers...

1) Please respond and let me know you understand being frustrated and that you bothered to read this.

2) HALP me with this! I've never been more disappointed in a company before... [Frown]

I understand your frustration. Entirely different technology, but I change cell phones every 4-5 years. Every time I do, I discover that the new phone is in no way compatible with the old phone such that my stored phone numbers, preferences, etc, are just completely not transferable. My worst moment was discovering that my prior new phone that LOOKED like it had the handy IR port did not in fact have an IR port. So, the quicky workaround I'd been using (uploading to phone from my PalmPilot) was not an option.

Possible fix -- by a cable for the stupid phone that I'd probably use once and lose somewhere.

Meh. Forget about it. I'll just gradually add numbers to my phone as I use them and then start over with a new phone in a few years.

grrrr

This system is pretty intuitive. And I had no problem figuring out these when I was a kid.

Both of my sisters got mp3 players of some sort this Christmas. My baby sister got a 1gig mp3 player of some sort, but it transfered right over using window explorer. My other sister got a new phone that was supposed to play mp3s, and a chip so that more songs can fit on her phone. But there was no cord to connect her phone to the computer, and the chip was really small so it didn't fit in the memory stick opening for her computer. We ended up using the mp3 player of my baby sister to transfer songs to the chip for my other sister's phone.

Apparently iRiver players didn't use to be this er...dictatorial.

I finally found out, I can create the folder structure using the WMP.

Then I can go into My Computer and dump the files into the player using the default Windows Explorer.

Hmm, sounds like your unit is possessed.... LOL

My boss has an iRiver (although I don't recall what model off-hand, it's a 20G hard drive unit with FM tuner), and I do all his file transfers because he's clueless. And I do it all in Windows Explorer with no problems at all. Of course, we don't bother with folders because, as I said, he's clueless and he'd likely never find what I loaded if I put his music into folders.

I tried using explorer, but when I couldn't create new folders I thought I was doomed. [Wink]

Then I discovered the WMP/Explorer combo. Works a lot better. I could also just create one big folder, organize it how I want it, then drag drop that sucker there.

This model IS nice because a single AA batter lasts for hours.

My mother's iPod lasts about maybe 4...? It seems like 4 I don't know the specs offhand.
