I'm taking a science fiction writing class this semester and we have been instructed to choose three movie choices to watch and discuss at the end of class. These movies need to deal with technology that does not exist in today's society. So far I have two ideas.
-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind -Jurassic Park
I need a third. If you have any good suggestions, please let me know.

I'm going to second Gattica. It's a very good movie, and it's near-future enough that it's speculative based on current society plus a few advances. It's intelligent enough to provide just the sort of hooks a class discussion or paper needs.
We have the DVD, and Fahim tells me we watched it. I picked it up to watch it a few days after we apparently watched it together, but I don't remember watching it. I don't remember a single thing about that movie.

Serenity of course. Me and my friend were watching it and Firefly yesterday and discussing the backstory behind the technology. It was pretty interesting for pure speculation.

I have to second Minority Report. I thought that movie was excellent and could spark some really interesting philosophical discussions.

For that matter, so was Bladerunner, no? (A Phillip K Dick story, I mean. It was based on his story "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?".) It also deals with a new technology and the aftermath.

Yup! I forgot about that one because I've never seen it, although I did know it was Philip K. Dick.

Imdb's top 50 Sci-Fi Movie List. I haven't seen many (19/50). Of those I think some of the best addresses of the effect of introducing new technology into a society are: Back to the Future (time travel, in a Delorean no less) Manchurian Candidate (mind control) Minority Report (pre-cognition) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (memory erasure)

Ni!
If you don't mind foreign films and subtitles, then I would suggest the original Abre los ojos instead. Same exact story, but much better done.

I'll have to vote for Gattica also. I thought it was done very well. A great Sci-Fi film without special effects.
As much as I don't want to bring it up, I can't believe no one has brought up Star Trek.
It would be interesting to speculate on how unlimited power, transporters and replicators would affect society, especially if you get past the almost utopian society Rodenberry created.

That's what it's about? Sheesh. Ironic that that's the movie that's been deleted out of my memory stores.

I like anime! Someone already mentioned ghost in the shell and castle in the sky. Akira would be good too. If you don't mind watching a mini-series, you could try Fooly Cooly (often abbreviated as FlCl). It's six half-hour episodes. It's a little...weird though.
Real life movies...Mary Shelley's Frankenstein would be good. Also surprised no one said The Matrix, but maybe everyone just realized that would be too easy and overdone and maybe I shouldn't have wrote this sentence...

First off, if any of you have not seen Primer you must see it.
And I'll also chime in with Gattaca.
Seconding Primer is a very easy choice for me, it is a very well made and 'true' science fiction film.
If you want an out of the park pick, watch THX-1138.
Edit: I wouldn't recommend The Matrix, because that would lead whomever to want to watch the 'rest' of a series that induces seizures. Edit2: My brother reminds me that THX-1138 has boobies; And he recommends Impostor (which also has boobies).

I think The Island looks fairly probable for the near future.
The fact that there was advertising everywhere in that society, and the issue of cloning and the wealthy being able to afford to live for ever more or less, these are all appealing issues that are going to be dealt with in the next few decades. It's an interesting potential snapshot of the future.
I, Robot too, though in a different direction.
